****Frequently Asked Questions****

Who the FAQ is WECB?

On paper WECB is Emerson’s freeform radio station. What this means is that we have a studio and we broadcast student-run radio shows from 9am-12am seven days a week. These shows stream online on our website at www.wecb.fm

But we’re also so much more than just a radio station! We are a completely student-run organization comprised of a range of teams, including Events, Marketing, Audio Production, and Music Staff, in addition to the DJs that make up the programming of our station.

What does each team do?

WECB Live!

"WECB Live" is our events team. This team hosts events for Emerson musicians such as open mics, showcases, and hires national touring bands to perform at Emerson. This team is also in charge of renting out gear to student musicians.

If you’re interested in event management, are highly motivated and enthusiastic to get involved, and are passionate about sharing music with the Emerson music community this is the team for you!

Milk Crate

Our Milk Crate team is dedicated to sharing news and content about the current music scene and culture. They curate our music blog, Milk Crate, with content such as album and concert reviews, host the Staff Pix radio show, create a relevant Zine each semester, and meet weekly to discuss upcoming projects and events.

If you’re interested in meeting others who share a love for music, are keen to write reviews, and/or are interested in covering local shows this is the team for you!

Marketing and Art Team

WECB has a big need for promotional content. This includes posters, graphics, videos, merchandize, social media posts, and more! The Marketing team is responsible for creating said content.

If you’re interested in flexing your creative design skills, are capable of a quick production turnaround time, and want to collaborate with other talented artists then this is the team for you!

Audio Team

Our Audio Production team is Emerson’s think-tank for audio creatives. This team learns the in-and-outs of both live and digital audio production in order to assist with our many events throughout the year. Additionally this team aids local artists in recording and producing their albums and/or EPs.

If you’re highly motivated, have a passion for audio tech, desire to learn more about live audio and digital production, and are keen to help out at our events this is the team for you!

How can I get involved?

Submit a written application for the team(s) you want to apply for! Applications will be made available at the start of the semesterly Org Fair. You can also grab an application from the basement of Ansin. We have a table in the lobby of the basement. This is also where you submit your completed applications. Be sure not to confuse us with WERS- they’re a completely different org!

When are applications due?

All applications are due by the end of the first week following the Org Fair. All of our applications are online so they are very easily accessible.

Where do I take my application?

Applications can be submitted either online or in-person to the Head of whatever team you are applying to, or in the application box in the basement of Ansin. WE have a table in the lobby of the basement. But, be sure not to confuse us with WERS- they’re a completely different org!

Do I need to sign up for an interview?

Prospective DJs- Yes! You can find the interview sign up sheet on the WECB Instagram page.

Other Teams- After your application has been reviewed by the Heads of whatever team you are applying for, they will contact you to arrange an interview.

Can I receive a non-tuition credit for WECB?

Yes! All members of WECB receive a non-tuition credit for their participation with our org at the end of each semester, if they are in continued in good-standing. (As long as you follow our rules and participate as expected you’ll be in good-standing!) However, it is important to note that students may only receive one non-tuition credit per semester, and a total of four non-tuition credits during their time at Emerson.

I have more questions. Who can I talk to?

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Aidan O’Flaherty, who is the General Manager of the station. You can reach him at [email protected]

What’s the deal with having a show?

WECB offers students the chance to create their own radio show with our station. It can be a one to two hour program, and your show can pretty much be anything you want! Our shows are not limited to music so if a talk show, radio play, or some other creative form of audio content interests you we’d love to hear about. All we ask is that you’re prepared to commit to a weekly spot on air and have a clear cut idea for your show. We’re super supportive of all your wacky ideas, but with that said WECB is definitely not a platform for any kinds hate speech or harmful rhetoric.

What are y’all looking for in a good show pitch?

What really interests our programming team are unique, clear, and well-articulated pitches! Telling us that you just want to have a show and plan to play your favorite music is not a pitch! We want to know why we need YOU specifically on the station, why your idea stands out from the crowd, and how you plan to sustain your content throughout the entire semester. The people who impress us the most are the ones that come well prepared with their ideas, with strong playlists/ or strong central themes for their show, and clear enthusiasm for being a part of WECB. Just get creative and have a clear idea of what you want your show to be about!

Can I play explicit music?

Yes! We now allow our DJs to play music with explicit lyrics (within reason, nothing too abhorrent) at any time of the day. The only catch is that you, yourself as a DJ are NOT allowed to swear on-air.

Can I pitch more than one show?

No! You are only allowed to be a member of one show per semester. Pick your best idea and stick with it- you can always do your other idea next semester.

How many people can be a part of one show?

Each show can have up to three hosts. This is the maximum of people allowed in our studio at any time. All hosts must attend every show of the semester unless of an emergency situation arises.

Can I have guests on my show?

Yes! You can have both Emerson and non-Emerson guests on your show. You just have to submit a guest request each time. However, you must follow the three person maximum in the studio policy.

I had a show last semester. Do I have to re-apply?

Yes! All DJs intending to return to WECB must reapply in order to do so. All returning DJs must submit an application, interview, and go through the re-training process in order to have a show again. This is non-negotiable.

Can I start a show mid-semester?

No, we have a hiring process at the beginning of every semester and fill all our available programming time. If you missed out on applications this time there are many other ways to get involved in our organization while you wait for next semester!

How can I record my show live?

Open Audio Hijack

Select window > Audio Recording and Source

Use safari for source and edit the preferences for recording to save to for the title of your show

Hit the record button on the window that pops up

For music copyright reasons, WECB can’t upload your show to Youtube or Soundcloud etc, but you’re more than welcome to set up a website or drive folder with your recorded shows so any listeners can access them later.

How can I prerecord my show?

Use the method mentioned above or you can edit together sections of your show (interviews, etc) using Logic Pro X, Audition, GarageBand or another audio editing software. If you prerecord your show, you still have to log into zoom at the time of your show to play the file. If you’re unable to make your time slot for any reason, please do your best to find another WECB DJ to play your prerecorded show on air for you. You can always reach out to the managers about one of us filling in for you to play your prerecorded show, but we can’t guarantee that we’ll be available every time.

Is there a place I can give feedback on my experience in WECB?
