Who is Andra Day? The singer who dazzled at the Super Bowl with the national anthem

Music news

The superbowl This 2024 has left many moments to remember. One of them, perhaps the most famous, has been the passionate kiss between Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift after the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory; or that of Usher’s criticized show during the intermission that many did not like when comparing it to others such as Rihanna or Beyoncé. The presence of the celebritieslike Blake Lively and Lana del Rey, who gave it their all from the VIP box with Swift.

But there were also other highlights beyond the NFL game and that they had nothing to do with Taylor Swift, who stole all the limelight from the sports evening, but everything to do with the music. In this event we are used to focusing on the game, the half-time performances and the trailer announcements of new films or which celebrities have attended, but little is said about the other performance that has all its merit and that this year has has also been much commented on.

We are talking about the start of the confrontation between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers at the Las Vegas stadium. Just before we begin, it is traditional in the United States for a person to sing the National anthem Lift Every Voice and Sing; a lyric that was born as a poem in the hands of James Weldon Johnson around the year 1900 and that has been adopted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as its official song.

This year, the immense honor (and responsibility) of singing this song has fallen on the voice of Andrea Day, a woman who was unknown to many until now. Although she is known for being a prolific singer who rose to fame in 2015 after becoming known by uploading covers on YouTube, her name began to circulate in some magazines when in 2021 she was linked to Brad Pitt.

But her fame goes far beyond romantic partners, since Andra Day also boasts of being the winner of the Golden Globe for Best Actress in the drama category for her role playing Billie Holiday in the biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Before her stardom, Day released her debut album, Cheers to the Fall, which peaked at number 48 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

Andra Day, whose real name is Cassandra Monique Batiewas born on December 30, 1984 in Edmonds, Washington.
