Dave Grohl’s 36-minute performance is the centerpiece of ” The Benefit Concert Volume 20 ”, which documents the annual Warren Haynes concert.
Five years after Dave Grohl performed his progressive rock epic “ Play » live for the first (and only) time, a video of the full, extended performance of the song has been revealed.
In December 2018, Grohl recruited an all-star team including Alain Johannes, Greg Kurstin, Chris Chaney, Barrett Jones and more to give “ Play » a one-off broadcast during the annual Christmas Jam benefit concert in Asheville, hosted by Warren Haynes of Gov’t Mule.
The performance of “ Play ”, which saw the song go from 23 minutes in the studio to 36 minutes on stage, is the centerpiece of The Benefit Concert Volume 20which brings together the most notable recordings from the 2018 Christmas Jam, which took place over two evenings.
In addition to Grohl (who also joined Haynes to perform “ Times Like These » by Foo Fighters, as well as “ Everlong ” alone), The Benefit Concert Volume 20 also features performances by Eric Church, Jamey Johnson, Phish’s Mike Gordon, Jim James, and Gov’t Mule.
“ Although Christmas Jam, the main event, is traditionally a one-night event, there have been three occasions where we felt the need to make it two nights: the 20th, 25th and 30th anniversaries, each them presenting extraordinary groupsHaynes said in a statement. The performances shown here are taken from the 30th anniversary in 2018, which in itself was a milestone for “the Jam”. However, its importance is amplified by the fact that the following year we took a well-deserved break with the firm intention of resuming activities as usual in 2020, without knowing that that year the COVID pandemic would occur. -19, which affected not only the world of music, but also the whole world. Fortunately, we were able to bring it back in 2022 with an exceptional lineup and we will continue this year with another memorable event. It’s great to be back. »
