Imagine hitting the open road with no destination in mind, just the landscapes of North America unfolding before you. This dream became a reality for Clayton and Theresa Balabanov, a retired couple from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, who decided to spend a significant portion of their savings to transform an old trailer into a luxurious mobile home.
From Idea to Reality
Before retiring, the Balabanovs knew they wanted to spend their newfound freedom exploring the vast and varied terrains of Canada and the United States. The idea of leaving their comfortable home in western Canada for a life on the road was exhilarating, but finding the right vehicle for their adventures proved challenging. Most options seemed suitable only for occasional vacations, not the nomadic lifestyle they envisioned.
Determined to create the perfect mobile home, Clayton and Theresa took matters into their own hands. They purchased an old trailer off eBay and embarked on a five-year renovation journey. The couple meticulously designed their new home to suit their needs, transforming the trailer into a cozy yet fully functional living space.
A Life on Wheels
Living year-round in a trailer required thoughtful planning, especially for self-sufficiency. “We needed solar power, water recycling, and such, to leave a smaller carbon footprint, offsetting the fuel used by the truck,” Clayton shared. Their efforts resulted in a two-story mobile home complete with a dining area, library, bathroom with a jacuzzi, kitchenette, streaming-capable TV area, office, garage, and bedroom—all connected by a spiral staircase.
Despite the limited space, the Balabanovs have managed to create a comfortable and inviting environment, even hosting friends for tea. Their mobile lifestyle has also allowed them to connect with other nomads and build a community on the road.
Challenges Along the Way
However, their journey hasn’t been without its setbacks, including roof leaks, solar battery issues, and melting wires. The couple has documented their adventures and challenges on their YouTube channel, Nomad Monster, sharing the realities of mobile living with a growing audience.
Reflecting on the project, Clayton expressed mixed feelings: “It took five years of my life when I could have bought something smaller and less capable, then gotten out and spent those five years on the road. But on the other hand, I really enjoyed doing it.” He advises those considering similar projects to start small before scaling up their mobile homes.
