The Donald Trump meme on TikTok that has once again popularized the Rockwell and Michael Jackson song

Music news

Its views are counted in the billions on the most popular social network right now among the youngest (and not so young) audience. One more notch in the power of TikTok to bring back current music hits that were already bombs in their time and that still have the power to hook us. And that is exactly what has happened with Somebody's watching me, the great duet song by Rockwell and Michael Jackson.

Surely if the king of pop were still alive today he would be enjoying this curiosity that he has brought back to the present. a hit that already swept 40 years ago. And all because Donald Trump's gestures at a meeting of politicians with the press have become a new meme that is sweeping. The chorus plays while Kennedy William Gordy sings “somebody's watching me” and the former president of the United States points at you with sarcasm in any context: Who is the drunkest, the laziest, the most stupid, the most cuckold… .?.

Tens of thousands of videos on any topic and any statement have as their soundtrack the collaboration that both artists made in the mid-80s and which was a real boom. Curiously, it took a long time for Michael Jackson to recognize his direct participation in this song at a time when his name was already being written in golden letters in the history of music worldwide.

In fact, Somebody's Watching managed to win the battle of the sales charts in the United States against one of the most important songs on the universal music scene: Thriller. Because the classic among MJ's classics could only reach number 3 on Billboard's Hot 100 list while Rockwell managed to sneak into number 2.

It is not at all common that someone like Michael Jackson, who was creating some of the most relevant moments on the world music scene, would lend himself to singing the chorus of a song, but the influence of Berry Gordy, owner of Motown and one of Michael Jackson's godfathersmade it easy for him to do so on the subject of Rockwell, whose real name was Kennedy William Gordy. Exactly! The son of the owner of Motown.

“Hey you, yes you, you're the one.” That is the theme of the Donald Trump meme that also matches Rockwell's lyrics in which he claimed to feel permanently watched. A song with a certain sonic parallel with Thriller even in its audiovisual proposal. Horror went very well with that funk and synthpop sound that we love so much.

A 10 for the music lover and Internet user who has rescued Somebody's watching me from our trunk of memories.
