Sam Mendes will tell the story of The Beatles in four films, from the point of view of each member of the group.
Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon will each be the subject of a film directed by Sam Mendes. According to a release from Sony Pictures, the films will tell the story of The Beatles from each member’s perspective.
“ I’m honored to tell the story of the greatest rock band of all time and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies “Mendes said in a statement.
Mendes, who has already directed American Beauty, The Rebel Wedding, Sky Fall and many other films, will be the first to have access to the story of each member and the musical rights of the group as part of a scripted film. He will direct and produce all four films alongside Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor of Neal Street Productions.
“ We intend to make this a unique, thrilling and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different points of view, that tell a single story about the most famous band of all time, Ms. Harris said. Having the blessing of The Beatles and Apple Corps to make this project possible is a huge privilege. From our first meeting with Tom Rothman and Elizabeth Gabler, it was clear that they shared our passion and ambition for this project, and we can’t imagine a more perfect home than Sony Pictures. »
All four films are expected to be completed and ready for theatrical release in 2027. The timeline and order in which the films will be released have not yet been detailed, although a press release described the approach as ” innovative and revolutionary “.
In 2021, the three-part documentary series on the Beatles Get Back premiered on Disney+, featuring nearly eight hours of archival footage. It was a real feast for the band’s fans, who were able to see up close the journey until their last public performance in January 1969. This event was to be immortalized by Peter Jackson in a two-hour film, which reduced to eight hours, but who mentioned the existence of a director’s cut of 18 hours. It’s no surprise that the legend of the Beatles should span four separate films.
“ Cinematic events today must be culturally seismic. Sam’s bold, large-scale idea goes in this directionsaid Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group. The combination of its team of top-notch directors, music and the story of four young men who changed the world, will shock audiences around the world. We are deeply grateful to all parties and look forward to breaking some rules with Sam’s unique artistic vision. »
