Sometimes, life surprises us in the most unexpected ways. For Jan Glazewski, a simple, hand-drawn map from his father became the key to discovering a hidden family treasure buried more than 80 years ago—protected from the chaos of World War II.
A Legacy Buried at the Brink of War
In the late 1930s, as the shadow of World War II loomed over Europe, Jan’s ancestors, living in eastern Poland, faced a heartbreaking decision. To protect their most cherished possessions—jewels, family heirlooms, and irreplaceable items—the family buried them, hoping they would survive the devastation of the war.
The Glazewski family, whose home would later become part of Lviv, Ukraine, never had the chance to return for the treasure after the war. Their legacy was lost to time until Jan, decades later, began his journey to uncover it.
The Map That Spanned Generations
Fast forward to today, and Jan, now 69, embarked on a mission to find his family’s hidden past. Armed with nothing but the map his father had drawn from memory, Jan began his search. “My father gave me this map with directions from his memory,” Jan recalled. That map, despite its imperfections, served as a bridge to Jan’s family history and brought him back to the place where the treasure had been hidden.

Unearthing the Past
With a metal detector in hand, Jan carefully searched the area marked on the map. What he uncovered was far more than he expected—a box containing jewels that had once belonged to his late mother. “It felt like holding a piece of her legacy,” he said, visibly moved. “It was more than finding a treasure; it was a promise to my father.”

More Than Just Valuables
For Jan, the discovery was about much more than the jewels. It was a deep connection to his family’s history and a reminder of the strength his ancestors showed during their struggles. Now, Jan plans to share this legacy with future generations, preserving the memories of those who came before him.
