Music news

The undisputed queen of the dancefloor Sophie Ellis-Bextor arrives in Italy for a single appointment on Tuesday 19 March 2024 at the Magazzini Generali in Milan.

23 years after its first publication, Murder On The Dance Floor has become a true viral phenomenon as well as one of the most discussed cinematic moments of the year, thanks to the film Saltburn and its iconic scene which sees the protagonist Barry Keoghan dancing completely naked to the tune of Sophie Ellis Bextor’s song.

Old and new fans flocked to streaming platforms to listen to the song, which became the soundtrack to millions of videos on Instagram and TikTok, giving rise to a real trend. Murder On The Dance Floor continues to conquer new heights globally also on Spotify and Youtube, together with the newfound success in the United States, where it debuted for the first time in the Billboard Top 100 and is continually rising.

One of the most significant artists to emerge from the British pop scene of the 2000s, Sophie Ellis-Bextor topped the charts with her dance sound heavily influenced by disco music and 80s synth-pop. The song Murder on the Dancefloor, launched in December 2001, marked his solo debut with the album Read My Lips, which went multi-platinum in Great Britain, platinum in Australia and gold in Germany, France and Brazil .

Consolidating her presence on the British and European charts, Sophie continued to enjoy success with albums such as 2003’s Shoot from the Hip and 2007’s Tripthe Light Fantastic. Throughout her career, she has explored a wide range of musical genres and styles, embracing also folk and orchestral pop. Examples of this are the albums Wanderlust (2014) and Familia (2016), which deviate from previous dance-pop work to embrace different sounds, inspired respectively by Eastern Europe and Latin America. Her latest album, Hana, released in spring 2023, closed the trilogy that began with Wanderlust and Familia. Inspired by East Asia, where Sophie traveled to Japan, the album, with its synth and prog-rock influences, received widespread critical praise and quickly reached the top of the UK charts.
