Over the course of a year, the woman and the individual she believed to be Brad Pitt maintained contact. As their digital relationship progressed, the impersonator confessed his love for her. Continuing the charade, he promised they would eventually meet in person and that she would visit Spain to see her. Moreover, he dangled the tantalizing prospect of her playing a role in his upcoming movie.
A Fictitious Love Affair
As months went by, the imposter’s behavior fluctuated. He oscillated between moments of closeness and affection to periods of distance. To quell any doubts she might have, the fraudsters sent the woman photomontages of the actor accompanied by love messages. According to the victim’s lawyer, this scam was a meticulously planned operation likely carried out by a group of individuals. “They are professionals: they know when to show affection and when to withhold,” he remarked.
In addition to regular communication, the woman was persuaded to send money to the counterfeit Brad Pitt, who claimed he needed funds to finance his next film in which she would supposedly appear. Altogether, she transferred a staggering sum of $170,000.
The Spanish woman’s realization of the hoax in May was a devastating blow. A complaint has since been filed, accusing the perpetrators of scamming, fraud, identity theft, and money laundering.
