Sergio Mendes, the Brazilian musician, composer and arranger, has died at the age of 83.

The artist died in Los Angeles on September 5. According to a statement from the Mendes family, the musician's “health had been severely compromised by the long-term effects of COVID.”

Born in 1941 in Niterói, Mendes began his career in the 1960s with the group Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66, which achieved worldwide fame with hits such as “Mas Que Nada”. With a unique style, he combined traditional Brazilian rhythms with jazz, pop and funk influences.

His music has also been recognized by international stars, and he has collaborated with world-famous artists such as Stevie Wonder and will.i.am.
