Review: SANS SOUCIS – “Circumnavigating Georgia”

Reviews

Giulia, the real name of Sans Soucis, for this debut album wanted to reconstruct and “circumnavigate” her world, the real one, from her adolescence to today, and the musical one.

A path of resilience, difficult, full of obstacles and prejudices, especially during the period she lived in Italy, which led her to become what she is and to develop her infinite artistic sensitivity.

“Circumnavigating Georgia” is a record full of poetry that exudes optimism and the future, without neglecting important topics such as the reclamation of her identity, the deconstruction of the patriarchal system and anti-blackness, all aspects that have had a great impact on her life.

The twelve tracks of this journey are the palette of his colors and his memories, used to paint his magical sound suggestions.

Musically, “Circumnavigating Georgia” is a multifaceted contemporary urban-pop record, with an international scope, but also designed for Italy, with three songs sung in Italian.

By pressing play, the disc opens with Best Classthe perfect introduction: a declaration of intent and a charge of contagious optimism that runs through the entire album. The pace picks up in the next one Sexed & Sexuala song in which Giulia moves elegantly in a tense club groove.

The wonderful sound world of Sans Soucis is revealed in all its emotionality with Juliathe first of three tracks sung in Italian: a light, dreamy waltz, suspended between Italian pop music and contemporaneity. Sophisticated jazz chords emerge in If I Let a White Man Cut My Haira song that explores identity and autonomy through the symbolism of hair.

We are all it's a light Italian pop but with a UK style and construction. An Anglophone R&B, soft and porous, pulsates in What You Did to Meas well as moves in alt-soul mode in Dancing On Thisa song that showcases all of Sans Soucis' vocal qualities and his urban spirit.

The atmospheres become rarefied and stratified Without Youwhile sliding between the folds of the soul Well done and in the next To Tiethen moving on to the dreamy, acoustic love of If I Had Seen Youa piece rich in orchestrations and references to tradition.

The album ends with the title track Circumnavigating Georgiathe final pearl, an intimate account of his journey through memories.

“Circumnavigating Georgia” is an excellent and quality album. Giulia has raised the bar and is ready for a new circumnavigation, this time around the world!

Absolutely worth listening to… you'll fall in love with it straight away!
