Review: Lucio Corsi – “I wanted to be a tough” (track for track)

Reviews

Lucio Corsi continues to write his fairy tales and musical fantasies with “I wanted to be a tough”.

A disc that looks like an old notebook full of pencil drawings, wrinkled sheets and some newspaper cutting glued with vinyl glue. A disc that moves between the reality and the imagination, between road stories and dreams with open eyes, with the light step of those who know that the truth, sometimes, is more in the details of a fairy tale than in the chronicles of the day.

Nine tracks that are rooms of the same building, inhabited by characters who seem to have come out of a film by Wes Anderson: there is Francis Delacroix, photographer and friend, Rocco who plays the rock of middle school, and a king of the rave, lonely and blurred, lost in a night of stroboscopic lights. Courses sings of them with a writing that is together poetic and cinematographic, using words that know of sidewalks and open skies, of washing machines that turn memories and hair hanging as shown clothes.

The opening is entrusted to “You are Il Mattino”, a song that flows like a river, dragging us in the time that passes without asking for permission. And then there is “in the middle of the night”, a ballad on friendship that stretches like a silent highway under the moon. And of course “I wanted to be a tough”, the song that brought Lucio to the Sanremo stage, making him arrive according to but conquering the criticism prize and, above all, the affection of those who see a different narrator in him, out of time and yet incredibly present.

Musically, the disc moves between rock and songwriting. Many references ranging from Graziani to Gaetano, from Dalla to Bennato. All with arrangements that seem stolen from a soundtrack of the 70s and a production with attention to detail by Corsi, Tommaso Ottomano and Antonio Cupertino. A mixture of nostalgia and freshness, of melodies that remember and of verses that fit into the head like a distant refrain.

A secret diary that smells of vinyl, music played without algorithms and various devils and old photographs, with sincere romanticism and a rebellious soul that, in the end, is exactly what makes it special.

Track for track

“You are Il Mattino” is a love song not for the fact that the story of a first time is narrated inside, but since inside this song there is the time that flows inexorable, like the current of a river that always and only and only on one side.

“Cigarette” is a song that tells a precise moment of my life. Of this strange period I will not add anything else, happy to keep me for me everything I have not added to the text of this song.

“I wanted to be a tough” he speaks that often it is not possible to become what was dreamed of and the difficulty of being balanced on this round land.

“Francis Delacroix” is a friend of mine from Volpiano, a photographer, therefore an imprisoner of voices and noises. The most authentic liar I've ever known. (The song is a Talkin Blues, it contains a lot of words, cities, islands, situations and hallucinations)

Let There Be Rocko is the unbridled story of a medium partner. Monstrous as only at that age you can be.

The king of the rave is the description of a romantic and ramshackle shape, a decadent star in the night. It is a time machine song that brings me back to my boyfriend's eyes, eyes capable of making even the most filthy figures epic, or to make the gods sloppy. The king of the rave is a provincial divinity, the king of the rave has returned to the track.

“Complicated situation” is a love song precisely because it is tragicomic. The narrative voice is that of a ridiculous, ridiculous man because he owns a tangled heart. He dreams and suffers, studies bankruptcy plans, escapes perfectly, returns and pretends.

“This life” is a reflection with two with my brain. A duel.

“In the middle of the night” is a song about friendship. It is a long piano tail on the Moon highway.
