Review: KATY PERRY – “143”

Reviews

I struggled to find anyone in the foreign press who reviewed, I won't say well, but at least adequately, “143”, Katy Perry's musical comeback.

One bad review after another.

It goes from The Guardianwho says: “after disastrous singles and videos that prompted environmental investigations, Perry's seventh album is not the predicted calamity, but it's not good either,” passing through NMEwhich defines it as quite boring, until The Independentwho slams the album by saying it feels painfully dated, steeped in a misunderstanding of '90s nostalgia that permeates much of 2020s culture. Most of the songs are driven by house-influenced beats, dragging the record into a bass-heavy quagmire.

Massacred!

Poor Katy doesn't seem to have done anything right on this album.
In fact, “143” is a bit of a predictable album: an unsuccessful mix between the Katy Perry of the past and this new version that looks to urban, but which basically flutters between banal house rhythms and nineties europop pieces. Even the beat of Gimme Gimmand, his trap episode, even reminds me of the base of yoshi of Machete!

Something is saved, without a doubt: the cleverness of I'm His, He's Minewhere it moves on the groove of Gypsy Woman of Crystal Waters, or Lifetimeswhich has a piano riff that vaguely recalls the classic italo house by FPI Project – Rich in Paradise. But the worst is yet to come, in addition to the first unfortunate single Woman's Worldwith Crushwhich looks like a cross between Alexia and Dragonstea Din Tei of the O-Zones.

“143” just doesn’t work. It’s a shame, because Katy has always been the expression of fun, sunny, quality pop.

Postponed until next time!
