Review: ICE SPICE – “Y2K!”

Reviews

Ten songs, all under three minutes direct, in a tight sequence saturated with bass, without filters that come at you like a blow, fast, fast. Here is “Y2K!” the debut album by Ice Spice.

Ice Spice is considered the new and undisputed star of rap. A tough girl who is liked by rappers and trappers but also by Taylor Swift and thanks to the endorsement of the Queen of Pop she has become the most hype new character on the scene.

Drill, rap but also pop. Ice moves perfectly in the kaleidoscopic sound spectrum. The obsessive 808, the super penetrating bass but also memories of 80s pop-R&B infused with electro (Think You The Shit).

And then the super sarcastic and abrasive humor of his lyrics, almost like an unreal character from a TV series or video game that perfectly sews the freestyle onto the beat.

Rap bitch on a pop chart, toastin' bitches like Pop-Tarts / You's a flop, bitch, knock it off, where the champagne? I'ma pop it off.”

And if that alone isn't enough, here's to up the ante with the feat. Only three but super heavyweight: Travis Scott, Gunna and Central Cee.

“Y2K!” is intentionally trashy, short and disposable. It will surely make big numbers but perhaps will not be remembered as one of the great rap albums. Fun while it lasts is the risk and the result of this generation.
