Review: HIATUS KAIYOTE – “Love Heart Cheat Code”

Reviews

When you want to raise the listening bar, a good procedure could be to put yourself in a relaxed situation, dedicate a little more than half an hour of time and press play on “Love Heart Cheat Code”, the new album by Hiatus Kaiyote.

Eleven playful, exuberant, sunny, lively tracks that illuminate. Hiatus Kaiyote have always spoken of their albums as microcosms, a complete ecosystem that unfolds through the sonic textures of their music. A rainbow compound made of avant soul, jazz, funky, word music and abstract overflows into electro-pop (White Rabbit) and even syncopated rock (Cinnamon Temple).

Lyrically, the Melbourne collective has conceived a completely imaginary place, a supermarket, the “Love Heart Cheat Code”, inside which there are shelves full of song-products. Throughout the album, the band emphasizes emotionality, a type of trust that can only be enhanced through creative harmony and hours of studio sessions. The result is a cohesive but relaxed work, and reflects a deeper awareness of Hiatus Kaiyote.

Finally, the superfine quality and musical research. The album also boasts other musicians from Melbourne, such as Taylor “Chip” Crawford, who plays an instrument of his own invention called a frello, guitarist Tom Martin and flutist Nikodemos. Also, for the first time in one of their albums, there is a very important creative force: Mario Caldato Jr., legendary producer already alongside the Beastie Boys and Seu Jorge.

Perhaps “Love Heart Cheat Code” is a more complex album than the previous “Mood Valiant“. A complexity perhaps too refined that perhaps has attenuated the maximum splendor of what for me remains something unattainable.

Aside from comparing themselves, the level of Hiatus Kaiyote is always at its best.

Once again, half an hour of great music!
