Interviews

Promoting you to live the 360º experience.

It is likely that throughout your life you have attended very memorable events or concerts, but do you remember what “that” was that made you feel special at that moment? Sebastian Diazfor example, identified that how the artists communicated through the visual part was a great stimulus for the viewer, a bridge that resulted in the fact that you let yourself be carried away throughout this experience.

“The musicians, the visuals and the lighting make a kind of triangle and everything complements each other. Precisely as an assistant, when I learned to make visuals, I realized that what you remember most about a show -at least in my case-, they are all those stimuli, and when that is managed to be executed successfully, it is gratifying.”

Okay, but what's with all this? On this occasion we will analyze the profile of a creative and visual artist who has long dedicated himself to creating material for different events, musical projects, etc. A work worthy of recognition and admiration.

Music as a watershed…

Sebastian Diazgraduated from the Digital Media and Technology Degree in CENTERbegan this journey 11 years ago when he created Wildan internet community that he founded with his best friends from middle school and high school in the company of his older brother.

Wild It is a community that has been transforming and that was my first approach to live music. What I liked about graphic design was what I had seen through WildI knew I wanted to be in the field of music, if not in concerts it would be sharing music. I had to take something from what I studied to complement my project.”

And that was how he initially entered a career in Visual Communication, a decision that soon changed when he attended his first festival in 2018. Mutek; an experience that helped him make one of the most important decisions of his life.

“I went to Mutek the first year I moved to CDMX and that festival literally changed my life. What prompted me to change my career and go for that idea was that festival. I feel like it's like him Disneyland of people who like technology. They are impulses and motivations where I would like to participate.”

In this way he made his way by executing the tasks in his new career, always supported by the experience of his teachers who showed him at all times that he could see his dreams with that sense of professionalism. For four years now, Sebastian Diaz He dedicates himself fully to his creative work and throughout this career he has been encouraged to experiment with various digital and analog tools and processes that have resulted in his participation in internal projects of his current work at Indie Rocks Group! (Indie Rocks! Forum, Pitchfork CDMX, Hypnosis), as well as external cases.

Visual A, Sebastian

Revisiting his anecdotes we find that, to date, he has a large catalog of artists with whom he has collaborated, however, some of those that quickly come to mind are for example JPEGMAFIA (Pitchfork CDMX – 2023).

“I never imagined collaborating with him because they are very different things visually and musically speaking, but it has been one of my greatest pleasures and prides to have operated visuals for him live.”

Also, Petite Amie during his presentation as support of Melody's Echo Chamber in it Road to Hypnosis 2023another that comes to light is Yussef Dayes (Indie Rocks Forum! – 2024).

“It was a show very memorable. There were no specific visuals, it was more of creating a filter for a closed circuit. “I didn't know his music much but listening to him live was a super cool experience.”

And of course Ximena Sarinanaan artist who joined her list of collaborations this year. “I would never have imagined that what I am doing would be part of their showbut when you get down to all the planning of the entire event, things start to make more sense if you start to dig a little deeper. I knew that Ximena He was someone great, but I discovered his music while I was trying to make the visuals.”

The profile of Sebastian It invites you to always be at the forefront of technologies, techniques, processes, tools, creative characters, since this enriches your way of working and the ideas you can provide to artists when they seek it. It sounds simple, but it represents a constant initiative to continue learning new things in your daily life.

“It's not crazy to think that I can make a living from making both my own content for myself and content for artists. It's not just the visuals, it's continuing to explore more tools, soaking up a little more lighting and things that can complement the show”.

Difficulties?

When digging into what could be a real challenge for a visual artist, of course several factors resonate, such as lack of professionalism, patience, and the idea of how difficult it is to connect some ideas with others.

“There is a lack of professionalism regarding the visual artist. In the United States, for example, they are well-paid jobs but in Mexico they are not and suddenly what always happens in the creative industries can happen where it is very expensive for them (…) There comes a point where also if you want to dedicate yourself to that, you have to put on the shirt and give you that opportunity to reject collaborations that represent a loss to you.”

On the other hand, he adds that it is important to be perseverant. “You have to know in depth what the artist wants to do. Obviously behind there is already a moodboard that the talent has already done previously and you are going to complement it with some moodboard yours. Being able to represent or match other people's ideas can suddenly be a little complicated because it is genuinely not something that is going to come out the first time (…) It takes having that patience and openness, because they are looking for you to download an idea. and you can share them but at the end of the day they are looking for you to collaborate with someone else.”

Sebastian Note that your ideas may take a while to happen. “It is not going to be overnight that you can put visuals at a large event, but if you have musician friends or family, approach those people and ask them for videos or photos to manipulate them, there is always a way to start from your own home, connect with more people with interests similar to yours (…) QuYou want to generate something from scratch, in an analog way, or something digital; There are different ways to reach the result and depending on the artist is how I approach the project. What I like most about being va is that there is no right way to do it.”

Seebastian

If anything that has to do with technology and the visual part catches your attention, Sebastian Diaz recommends the following.

  • “Do networking “It is super important.”
  • “It's a lot of knocking on doors and not being afraid to contact people or write to them that you are interested in putting something together with them.”
  • “Browse the internet, everything you want to search for is there; tutorials, profiles, creative people. You can find general to more specialized information if you dig there. Wear chatGPTit can be a great tool.”
  • “Remember that there is no single right way to do it.”

“There are many creatives who are dedicating themselves to this, each one has their own processes and results that are very different from what you have and it is interesting to get to know them all.” As long as you have fun doing it, it's fine.”

Last year we were able to witness his work with Altın Gün during the Hypnosis Festivalthis year get ready to live great moments and a 360º experience. Don't forget to follow his journey!
