MARK KNOPFLER new single titled “Watch Me Gone” (Listen to the song)

Music news

Goes out Watch Me Gone Mark Knopfler’s new single. This is the second song from the long-awaited album One Deep River, out on April 12th.

Watch Me Gone is a journey back in time that sees Knopfler return to his teenage dreams, when he left the streets of Newcastle to try to make a living as a guitarist.

As he himself tells it:

The dreams of a teenager… for me they have always been the fuel that keeps you going.

That’s why I’ll still cross the street to look at a guitar window. I remember going to City Hall to see Van Morrison or Bob Dylan and wanting to do that too.

Statistically what are the chances of making it? But I was a young man with a comedic attitude determined to make it.”

THE DISC

His tenth solo album on his own British Grove label via EMI, features 12 elegant new Knopfler tracks, where his warm tone of voice, poetic lyrics and guitar playing are strongly present but never out of place and as always dazzling .

The first single from the album precedes the album Ahead Of The Game, a melancholic, perhaps autobiographical, story about a singer-songwriter struggling to make it, told on a classic, typically Knopfleresque riff.

The title track One Deep River reflects Knopfler’s deep emotional connection to the river that runs through his hometown Newcastle. “Crossing the Tyne is always on your mind,” he says. “You did it as a child and the feeling remains the same every time you do it. When you leave the city or when you return this element always connects to your childhood, and its power does not go away.”

“One Deep River” offers an uninterrupted flow of future Knopfler classics, characterized by the usual cultured lyrics and refined guitar textures. They draw on a history of influences that cross the genres of blues, folk, rock and beyond, revealing their charm with grace and depth as always.

One Deep River was produced by Knopfler together with his long-time collaborator Guy Fletcher and recorded at British Grove Studios in London.

THE BAND

The band behind the sounds of One Deep River features Mark Knopfler on guitars, Jim Cox and Guy Fletcher on keyboards, Glenn Worf on bass, Ian Thomas on drums and Danny Cummings on percussion, Richard Bennett on second guitar and newbie Greg Leisz on pedal steel guitar; Mike McGoldrick played flute and bagpipes, John McCusker played violin, and backing vocals were performed by sisters Emma and Tamsin Topolski. All songs were written by Mark Knopfler.
