In a survival story that feels more like a Hollywood thriller than real life, a Dominican man found himself stranded on the vast Caribbean Sea for 24 days, with limited resources and dwindling hope. Yet, against all odds, it wasn’t a state-of-the-art survival kit or high-tech gadget that saved him—it was something much more humble: a bottle of ketchup.
A Bottle of Ketchup: A Lifesaver in the Open Sea
Elvis François, a 47-year-old Dominican, may not be a household name, but his extraordinary tale of survival has caught the attention of media outlets across the globe. François was stranded in the Caribbean Sea after being swept away while repairing a sailboat in Saint Martin. With no food or supplies, he relied on a bottle of ketchup, garlic powder, and Maggi cubes, mixing them with water to stay alive for almost a month.

“I had nothing to eat, just ketchup, garlic powder, and Maggi cubes,” François said in a video shared by the Colombian Navy. “I mixed everything with water and survived like that for about 24 days.”
François’s use of these simple ingredients not only kept him alive physically but also gave him the mental strength to keep going in the most desperate of times.
Adrift and Disoriented
François’s ordeal began in December when he was working on his sailboat near the port of Saint Martin. Due to unexpected weather conditions, he was swept out to sea. With no navigational skills or tools, he found himself completely disoriented, stranded in the open ocean. The isolation was immense, and the realization that there was no way to return home weighed heavily on him.
In a statement, the navy explained, “Without any knowledge of navigation, he was lost and unable to use the boat’s equipment. His efforts to regain control were unsuccessful.”
François tried to call for help, but his distress signals went unanswered. “I couldn’t do anything but sit and wait,” he recalled. “24 days away from land, with no one to talk to… at times, I thought about my family. It was tough.”

A Signal of Hope
Just as François’s hope began to fade, a miracle appeared in the sky. Three weeks into his ordeal, he spotted an airplane passing overhead. In that moment, he knew he had to act fast. Using a mirror, he reflected the sunlight in an attempt to signal for help.
“I saw the airplane pass by on January 15th, and I used the mirror to reflect sunlight,” François explained. “It worked.”
His signaling paid off. The airplane saw the reflection, and rescue efforts began. François’s sailboat was located about 120 nautical miles northwest of Puerto Bolivar in Colombia. His rescue was a success, and he was eventually handed over to immigration services to arrange his return to Dominica.
François’s story is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the unexpected ways in which survival can unfold. In this case, an everyday item—ketchup—played an essential role in keeping him alive long enough to get rescued. While it may seem unlikely, it’s a reminder that even in our most desperate moments, sometimes the simplest solutions can make all the difference.
