The Oscar-nominated director, who notably worked on Amsterdam, takes the reins of the Linda Ronstadt biopic project.

The biopic on Linda Ronstadt with Selena Gomez in the lead role has found its director: David O. Russell. The latter was nominated for an Oscar and notably worked on Happiness Therapy and American Bluff.

According to Variety, the filmmaker will take care of the film, teased by Selena Gomez and confirmed by WECB.

In an Instagram post, the singer and actress posted a photo from Linda Ronstadt’s autobiography released in 2013, entitled Simple Dreams. Fans were quick to speculate about what role Selena Gomez, who shares Mexican heritage with the legendary singer, would play in the film.

Nominated three times in the Best Director category at the Oscars, directed the film Amsterdam, released in 2022. We notably find Selena Gomez’s friend Taylor Swift in the cast.

The biopic is currently in the pre-production phase. John Boylan, manager of Linda Ronstadt, and James Keach, who handled the documentary Linda and the Mockingbirds (which retraced his trip to Mexico), are co-producers. Other cast members and release date have not been announced.

The biopic will follow the hit documentary Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, released in 2019. The latter traced her genre-crossing career that spanned nearly five decades, incorporating her reign on the country rock scene into 70s, his “Pirates of Penzance Broadway” moment and more. “I couldn’t take it anymore,” she told WECB. “I said to myself, ‘I can’t believe I’ve done so much!’ »

After her last live performance in 2009, the singer retired from performing following her diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease in 2012.
