John Mellencamp wants to “show America the carnage” to end the violence

Music news

Musician John Mellencamp released a statement saying this is the best solution to ending gun violence.

John Mellencamp, a long-time gun control advocate, released a statement Friday condemning gun violence and encouraging America to confront the ” carnage » in order to put an end to it.

Forgive me for stating an obvious truth. I do it out of love for this country and out of pain to learn, once again, that children have been killed by gunswrote Mr. Mellencamp. If we as a country want to find within ourselves the collective will to change our gun laws, let’s stop playing stupid political games. Let’s show the carnage on the news. Let’s show the American people the dead children and others who were beaten. Show us what guns and bullets can do to the human body. »

It’s unclear what exactly prompted John Mellencamp to make this statement, but his words came the day after a shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade left one person dead and 22 injured, including more than half were minors.

The media must be brave enough to let Americans see what slaughtered children look like. Otherwise, I fear that too many people will perceive gun violence as an abstraction, a story that is repeated almost every day and has a numbing effect.”continued Mellencamp.

The singer, who questioned the Second Amendment in his song ” Hey God (2023), compared the situation to the Vietnam War, where protests against the conflict only increased when images of the brutality of the war were broadcast on television news.

I say this as a father and a human being, with deep empathy for the parents whose children saw their lives end so suddenly and senselessly: show America the carnage. I am not insensitive, and I know it will be painful to see. But, unfortunately, I think this is the only way to shake America out of its torpor. »
