Filmmaker John Carpenter has released a black and white music video for “ My Name Is Death ”, featuring members of Weyes Blood, The Paranoyds and SadGirl.
Better known for his horror and action films than for the noir genre, filmmaker John Carpenter will soon release his next album of soundtracks for films that don’t exist, Lost Themes IV: “Black”. Of course, he does it his own way, as shown in the single “ My Name Is Death “.
The music, which Carpenter recorded with his longtime collaborators (his son Cody Carpenter and his godson Daniel Davies) is driven by powerful bass and chilling synths. While Hitchcock’s films used the percussive strings of composer Bernard Herrmann and The Third Man used a fancy zither, Carpenter and his collaborators create music that could come from a John Carpenter film, but with more shadows.
After all, it was the play of light and darkness that made film noir great, and filmmaker Ambar Navarro’s music video for “ My Name Is Death » pays homage to the aesthetic of the genre. The six-minute clip features Natalie Mering (Weyes Blood), Staz Lindes (The Paranoyds) and Misha Lindes (SadGirl) dressed as if they were pulling a heist in the 1930s, while the musicians play synth and the eyes look through the keyholes. The whole thing ends like a film noir, with the addition of an electric guitar solo.
“ Noir is a typically American genre born in post-war cinemaCarpenter said in a statement. We grew up loving black and were influenced by that genre for this new album. The video celebrates this style and our new song, ‘My Name Is Death’. »
The project, according to Davies, began with images. “ Sandy (King, John’s wife and producer) had given John a book for Christmas, containing film noir footage, all photos from the erahe said. I looked through it and said to myself, “I like this imagery and what these titles make me think of. What if we were freely inspired by it? What if the titles were those of some of John’s favorite noir films?” »
The album is the trio’s first collection of music after the third Lost Themes in 2021. Since then, they have written the music for Halloween Kills, Firestarter And Halloween Ends. Carpenter returned to direct last year for the miniseries Suburban Screams from Peacock, which looks at real-life scary stories set in small towns.
