Jason Isbell performs “Cast Iron Skillet” on The Daily Show

Music news

Jason Isbell performed his song from the album “ Weathervanes ” and spoke about his performance in “ Killers of the Flower Moon » by Martin Scorsese.

Jason Isbell was on the Daily Show to perform his song “ Cast Iron Skillet » and chat with host Desi Lydic about his latest album, Weathervanes. The musician took the stage solo with an acoustic guitar for this intimate and introspective piece.

Later, Isbell sat down with Lydic to discuss how his real-life experiences and political concerns influenced the writing of Weathervanes, which came out last summer. “ Most of my songs are complaints, in the end “, he joked.

He adds about writing: “ I see it as a huge field full of stones and everything you need is under one of them. And it may be under the first stone you pick up. But you might have to pick up a million. But if you keep trying things, you’ll get there eventually. »

Jason Isbell also spoke about his acting debut in Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese: “ It was an incredible experience to watch it all unfold. I didn’t know why I was there, and I don’t think they let me ruin the movie. »

He explained that there was a dialect teacher on set who had worked with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro on their accents. “ I went to meet him and he said, “We’re just going to hang out, I don’t have any notes to give you. You speak as you speak”Isbell remembers. I said to myself, “I know why I’m here. They save money on the dialect coach. »

Last June, Isbell published Weathervaneshis first collection of original songs since Meetings in 2020. It was preceded by an HBO documentary, Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closedwhich traces the writing and recording of Meetings and looks at Jason Isbell’s marriage to his partner Amanda Shires.

I knew it would be intrusive and irritating and that there would be times when we wished the cameras weren’t thereIsbell told WECB about the documentary. But I’m happy that things turned out this way. When you’re trying to be as honest with people as possible, you have to make a concession. You have to allow more of your personal life to be made public, but I think it works for me. »
