An intimate reflection of his musical journey.
Santiago Mijareswho has left his mark on projects such as Little Jesus and Petite Amienow presents us with a work that fully connects with his sensitivity and passion for music. This album is not only the fruit of years of accumulated experiences, but also a rebirth that mixes folk and Latin influences with a psychedelic touch, revealing his honest and personal approach in each song.
More than a set of songs, the album is an introspective journey where each track brings us a little closer to their world. In collaboration with musician friends, Sanje explore what it's like to “turn the page.” Suddenly Again captures that desire to move forward, to find new paths and give life to the things that keep us moving, a search that Santiago Share in the following interview.
“Suddenly, I realized that all these songs that I had composed and saved over time shared a common theme: rebirth, but in the sense of learning to live with trauma, of understanding those cracks and ruptures without letting go. that take up all the memory,” he shared Santiago about the thread that unites each track Suddenly Again. For him, this album reflects his own healing process, and he is grateful to both music and therapy, which helped him face those “ugly things” and finally find a space for them in his life.
This album arises from emotional experiences that seek to resonate with those who listen to it. The songs evoke intense moments: the loss of a loved one, a broken heart, the disappointment of falling in love again and it not working out, and the repetitive cycle of failing and getting back up. “I think it is very important that, if you can talk about those experiences, you talk about them so that there are people who can identify, who may be going through the same thing or something similar… you promised yourself that I was not going to happen again and it happened again, and you're there like 'what an idiot I am,' it happened to me again, I thought this person was the one,” he explained Sanjeexpressing that his music “A lot comes from that, that I'm in exactly the same thing again, doing the same thing.” With his lyrics, he also reflects the vulnerability of that non-linear emotional path. “We think that improving and being better is something very linear, but zero is linear.”
Regarding his creative process, he stated that it does not follow a fixed structure. “I let the muse attack me whenever she wants, at any time,” he explained. Although he draws inspiration at unexpected moments, such as right before going to sleep, he recognizes the bravery of getting up to capture an idea. “More like I have my antennas on high all the time, and I already decide if I have enough energy to follow that or maybe I decide to sleep a little more… It takes being very brave to open your sleep and record.”
He also mentioned that his Latin identity is a central influence in his music, acknowledging that, for a long time, “I was that kid wanting to be gringo or European.” Now, however, he is proud to embrace his roots. “Being from Veracruz and Mexican leaves something in your subconscious, Latin music is everywhere, and having it in your DNA is something beautiful,” he commented. That connection with his cultural heritage is what nourishes his art and gives a special flavor to his songs, where he invites us to enjoy every Latin nuance that Suddenly Again offers us.
Santiago describes the musical and personal connection he shares with Julio Gudiño as something unique: “Juls and I are like soulmates musicals from the south of Mexico City; “We love each other.” Their friendship and collaboration deepened when Yöels asked him to produce his first EP. “We have been very close for a long time and we have always had very cool communication,” he mentioned, remembering how the project became an intimate experience in his home and showed his ease in “Talking musically” together. Furthermore, by collaborating in “Better than before”highlights the influence of Brazilian music, a style that July dominates and inspires Santiago. Soon, they will launch another collaboration in a work of Yöelswhere they will explore the feeling of belonging to many places without being completely in any one.
He then talked about his experience as a producer, comparing it to what it's like to produce for himself. “Producing for someone else is like being a vehicle for that artist to get to where they need to go,” he explained, noting that his role in other people's projects is to support the other's vision, adding arrangements when necessary. However, working on your own material is a freer and more playful experience. “It's having the games to yourself… you can do whatever you want without any rules, with me being my own boss,” he commented. In this process, his brother is usually his critic and guide, helping him filter ideas and refine his songs.
Highlighted the songs “Kristina” and “Good Ghost” as the ones he enjoyed recording the most, especially because he had the participation of his friends The Esplifs. “I flew them to Mexico right during COVID, we locked ourselves in the studio and it was the first time I felt that Sanje something concrete was done,” he recalled. He also values the intimacy of recording alone, like when he recorded “Suddenly again” in his studio at five in the morning, accompanied only by his dogs, which allowed him to connect deeply with his music.
Songs with names of friends and loved ones represent for him a way to immortalize those special bonds. “Saul” is a trombone choir that his friend and trombonist, called Saulcomposed and that Santiago incorporated into the album. “Carlos” It emerged from a dream vision of being in a song with his friend, and perfectly reflects his essence. “Kristina”inspired by a love from his time in Veracruz, captures the simplicity of an everyday day and the feelings it evoked. Sanje He describes these songs as “photographs” of significant moments: “I want to make an album full of names, dedicating each song to someone close to me.”
For him, collaborating is much more than music: “It's great to meet artists and their ways of imagining daily life.” He explained that the best thing about being a producer is not just music, but “sharing everyday life, drinking coffee, eating bread,” seeing “How they interact with dogs or what they think about politics.” All this becomes inspiration that “Gets into your psyche.” For example, Shout Exclamation! inspired him to make an album Devohis favorite band. “I thought, 'If these kids can do it, why can't I?'” Thanks to friends, he learned to talk openly about “The mind and crises”, topics that he now appreciates “without fear.”
One of the greatest learnings for Santiago has been “Do not expect anything from anyone.” He remembers how in his youth he felt that “The world owes you something,” but now he has understood that “The world owes you nothing.” This change helped him focus on his work, to be “Responsible to his friends and colleagues” and to value moments to work, rest, and read. The fundamental thing, he commented, is “Better to be surprised than to be disappointed.”
He is excited to open the shows of Girl Ultra in the United States, an opportunity that will allow you to “Connect with Latin people” abroad and share the stage with your friends. He is also eager to start a new album that is “Completely Different” and plans “A show big in Mexico City, go around the entire Republic.” Playing in his land and being with his people is something that fills him with excitement.
He commented that the most special thing about his career is the freedom to “Be my own boss and do what I want.” He is grateful for having worked with “Super cool people” who have given him the flexibility to play “Only with my guitar or with others.” 15 people.” That possibility, he said, is what he enjoys most about his job.
With deep gratitude, Santiago He wanted to thank those who have shown so much love for his music. He expressed that the love and messages he receives “are the only thing I do this for,” because his work is “something I did with a lot of time and love.” He appreciates being invited to spaces to share his thoughts, something that “I love and am very grateful.”
