Interview with Polo & Pan

Interviews

Dark and mysterious echoes that explore the unknown to 22:22.

Talk about Polo & Pan It is talking about a sound trip in constant transformation. Since its debut, the French duo has managed to build its own universe, combining the elegance of electronics with rhythms of different latitudes. Paul Armand-Delillebetter known as Breadtells us about the process behind this new album 22:22 and the influence of technology in its sound and the special relationship they have built with Mexico.

An without a compass: the evolution of Polo & Pan

If something distinguishes 22:22 of his previous albums is the freedom with which he was conceived. Unlike his first works, where each song had a clear direction from the beginning, this new album emerged from pure experimentation, without preconceived ideas.

This album has a different sensation. It is a little more night, less sunny and positive, but perhaps more mysterious, with one more environment than sun. We do not plan it that way, it simply happened. In our first album we said 'Let's make a cumbia' or 'Let's do something about Brazil or Africa', but this time we simply play and let the music flow. “

The process was almost handmade. Instead of arguing where they wanted to take the sound, they focused on playing and letting the machines do their magic.

We didn't talk about what we were going to do. We build a great study, we gather many machines Vintage. We had a great assistant who helped us a lot and created the album playing instead of speaking. It was a very natural process. “

Technology as a sound identity

The music of Polo & Pan It has an obvious connection with nostalgia and futurism, a combination that Bread It attributes to the use of analog synthesizers and classic samplers. For him, the evolution of music has been intimately linked to the creation of new instruments, something that, according to his perspective, has not happened in recent decades.

“We have not invented new instruments in a long time. When the electric guitar emerged, Rock & Roll was born. When the synthesizers and samplers arrived in the 80s and 90 Star Wars, Back To The Future and Blade Runner. My life mission was to buy those synthesizers and make them work, and finally, over time and our career, we managed to gather them and give them life. “

Beyond nostalgia, this rescue of analog technology has been a fundamental part in the construction of the sound universe of Polo & Pan. Its own language that, although inspired by the past, continues to look towards the future.

A dream come true: collaboration with Metronomy

Among the surprises you hide 22:22one of the most exciting for the duo was the collaboration with Joseph Mount of Metronomy. What began as a coincidence between labels ended in a natural connection within the study.

Joseph was taking a Metronomy break to do other things, such as collaborations. He took a pair recently. We had a drink with him and it was incredible. Joseph is a great inspiration for us. When we created Polo & Pan, we saw it at a festival and it was already a legend for us. So it was an honor to meet him and work together in the study. “

Mexico: the second home of Polo & Pan

Few countries have been as important in the duo's trajectory as Mexico. From your first set As DJs until his constant visits, the link with the Mexican public is something that Polo & Pan They do not stop highlighting.

We have always said that Mexico is our second home. Our first DJ Set was in Mexico before Polo & Pan existed as such. Since then it is the country where we have played the most in the world. “

More than a destination on his tour, for the duo, playing in Mexico is always synonymous with new experiences. “Mexico has always shown us a lot of love. It is an incredible country with magical places, and we are excited to come back. Whenever we come, we are waiting for incredible adventures and unforgettable moments.”

A cycle that continues in motion

For Polo & Panevolution is part of its essence. 22:22 It is the reflection of a moment in his career where exploration and game are the only compass.

Each album is a reflection of who we are at that time. It was never a conscious decision to do something different, it simply happened. We continue to evolve, grow and discover new ways of making music. “

And so, without rigid plans or paths traced, Polo & Pan They continue to advance in their own sound orbit.
