Interviews

“People make music,” the depth of the act of dance in the new Ezra Collective album.

The British group will visit Mexico as part of the festival Bahidorá, where The stakes It will become a dance floor. In addition, he will embark on his first Tour By South America, promoting his most recent studio album, Dance, no one's watching, A tribute to dance and nightlife.

This album summarizes the inspiration for everything Ezra Collective: The dance. Same that will be the favorite reason to gather in the state of the eternal spring and appreciate both the new songs of the band and “Children of the Internet” either “What am i to do”, Classics that we love. To learn more about your visit to Mexico and a Insight of the new album, we talked with Femi koleoso, collective drummer.

Ezra Collective We were surprised with the announcement of his participation in the festival Bahidoráwhere he will share the stage with Kaytranada, Rusowsky, Angélica García And more. An exciting poster that will also be a living room for your first show In Mexico. “I have been in Mexico three times, but this is the first time with Ezra Collective, I am very excited. I have gone to the festival Bahidorá before and loved him. I love Mexico, people, food, I love everything, so I'm waiting anxiously to express myself there. I can't wait, really. You reminded me that I will have the opportunity to return in a few weeks and made me very happy, ”said the drummer.

With this new album we can only imagine the magnitude of the presentation, framed by a magical location and the Mexican public, which is always responsible for surprising. Although Dance, no one's watching It is the synthesis of a holiday in the city, it will also serve as a portal to the community of the festival.

(He show) Change every night, because concerts are about people. It is not about me, it is about us and that we are more important. If we play properly in that showit will be about us and that is what excites me the most. I can't wait to put people to dance, it will be liberating, you will feel beautiful and what a wonderful festival to present our first Mexican concert. It is excited by the public and how special it will be for us as a band, ”said Femi Koleoso.

The musician looks to this side of the ocean with great love and the desire to give the best possible concert, then, as he tells us, Ezra Collective He is more than aware of his Mexican fans, who have been present in their social networks. “What makes Mexico particularly beautiful is the community they have created with Ezra Collective. We read its beautiful messages online, every time we publish something there is someone asking us to go to Mexico. Having the possibility of going, it's a dream come true. ”

A great love for the Mexican public and the need to bring these new songs to the stage, they put us to reflect on the inspiration of the album. The dance is a natural act that accompanies us since the beginning of time, which we sometimes take for granted, but the synergy and vibration of the movement are more than present.

It is wonderful to think that dance is natural for human beings, it is, but, while we cross the world, we can forget that this is our purpose. Music has the innate power to bring humans to their most natural state. Have you ever felt that the day left until you listen to a song that makes you stop? Music and dance remind us who we are, ”said the musician.

The community and space sure creates a dance floor are worthy of honoring from the composition of a piece. Well, Dance, no one's watching, Tribute the sacred act of dance, everything in it is a meeting of cultures, where the most important thing is to feel and generate union. “Let's say that music is almost the opposite of a debate, where you oppose an opinion or someone else, dance is to be together. The battle is a fight until you add the word dance, thus a dance battle becomes a community. That is why I try to return to my natural state in the dance, ”he explained KOLEOSO.

Like Ezra Collective wanted to offer people the opportunity to add a Soundtrack To his dance ”, Femi Koleoso.

In addition, this album is designed as a complete work, when we enter it we find four acts, which refer to the beginning of the night, to the energy of the club, the climax of the dance and the moment when darkness is a memory. Key elements to understand a story. “(Dance, no one's watching) is a single piece, which is conveniently divided into its fourteen pieces. The best way to digest the album is listening from beginning to end, ”he said.

It is not necessary to explain the album, because it is full of colors and nuances, like a roller coaster, similar to that night that you will always remember. The same is reflected in the diversity of styles in their songs, at times reggae, in other ska and funk, to Latin rhythms such as sauce and cumbia.

“The album, in one sense, is the journey of a life: you are born, you are up, sometimes below, there are things that make you happy or make you cry and, in the end, you go to heaven. So I wanted to sound and feel, as if ascended towards something. While gathering a life, he is capturing only one night: 'N29 ' It is the push towards the dance floor, 'Cloakroom Link Up. (Act 1) ' It is the beginning, when you make a friend at the entrance, 'Lights on. (Act 4) ' It is the time when the party ends and the lights light, you see things you did not want to see or fall in love as soon as you see the light. They are all those trips in one night, it is the life of the album, ”described the drummer.

Your life can be told in one night and one night can change your whole life, ”Femi Koleoso.

As composers there is a difficulty point when structuring the album and redesigning the nuances of their styles, a puzzle that Ezra Collective He armed since sincerity and as a gift for his people. “It's about being honest, following your first thought and intention, using everything you can in music, allowing it to be present. Something important for this album is that there were people present when we recorded it, there were people dancing in the same room. I let that influence music and us, because honesty is the best type of music. I am proud that the album has been leaked, ”said the musician.

And, among so many styles, there is a clear influence of Latin music, intervened by the classic group of the collective. Among them, a communication channel was created, fulfilling the music cycle, where the one is inspired, gathers cultures and honors love for others.

“I love Latin American music, I love the places where it comes from, I love how music can transport you to another place. I am sitting in a room in London, but if I close my eyes I am dancing in Mexico City. At the same time, I am not Latin, I am African and has to sound like an African in London writing Latin music. I don't want to sound like a Latin musician, I want it to be seen in the sound how much I appreciate them. It is very exciting to play these songs in Latin America, I think they will be the best dance clues to Ezra Collective”, Said the drummer.

Between cultures the space becomes smaller, such as the unwavering bond that exists between African music, Latin music and the rest of the world. “Many Cuban people are of Nigerian origin, there are some rhythms there. That's what music is about, it is what we try as Ezra Collectivethat Latin American music influences us and that our music reaches you. It is a cycle that must be fulfilled, there the beauty of music is hidden. ”
