An exploration of new sounds and the redefinition of Current Joys’ bedroom pop.
Nick Rattigan better known as Current Joys will be presented for the first time on February 28 at the Indie Rocks Forum! We were able to interview him and learn a little more about his creative process and his recent album, LOVE + POP.
Six months have passed since the release of their tenth album LOVE + POP and through this material Current Joys sets a new standard of sound innovation, experimenting with new genres and preserving the best of cinematic indie rock.
The production of new material is going back to the studio and working on an exploration of sounds, in the case of Current Joysthe recording process took place in his own studio which is part of his house.
I did it all in this chair, which I am now sitting in, the studio is in my house. “This album came out of me like a fever dream or something, like I came here every day and made a song about the daily album and then narrowed it down to 12 songs.”
Rattigan He told us a little about the crazy process he carried out with this material, very different from the last two albums, going from recording in a studio to returning to record at home; like making music again for the first time.
“Constantly while I was making songs I was asking my friends to send me things they were working on and then I wanted to be a very collaborative person… An album with my friends that I love and who are making music.”
Known for his sonic continuity through bedroom pop and indie rock, Nick, In this material he felt fascinated by the incorporation of new genres, with hints of dark wave, hyperpop and hip hop, he decided to make his own version of what other artists are doing with their music.
I was so excited to make new genres, along with this energy inside me, it created this like a fire to make it sound like chaos, where I just did something and didn’t worry if it sounded strange or bad… It’s a zone of freedom to operate creatively where I felt trapped, like in indie rock, a lot of rules to follow, and I was like: I’m not going to follow any rules and I don’t care what people think.
The interest of Rattigan Because of the cinema, it is part of its musical concept and the name of the album comes from the anime. Neon Genesis Evangelion, I was obsessed with it while it was in production. “I tried to create the feeling that there are a lot of rule breaks, it’s very interesting visually, I tried to take that energy and make something more interesting sonically.”
Behind the cover art is a painting done by her friend carly, prior to this they took a photograph of their friends and then transferred it to oil. “I think it’s one of my favorite albums we’ve ever made.”
Regarding his next show in the house Indie Rocks Forum!, Current Joys he commented. “I designed this set to be a really good moment, it’s very satisfying for me.”
Be part of this show and don’t miss a night full of classics and new songs.
