Interview with Cigarettes After Sex

Interviews

Returning to the roots.

Everyone at some point has gone through a breakup so personal that it becomes impossible to discuss. Greg Gonzalezvocalist of Cigarettes After Sexfaced these uncertainties to see the situation differently. We are never really alone when we talk about our emotions with other people.

X's is the third studio album by the trio from Texas. It was born from experiences that happened to the vocalist. “The way in which Cigarettes evolves is really in the groove (…) the songs will remain as personal love songs,” he mentions. Gonzalez.

“I felt like I had to do it, (…) I knew I had to talk about those emotions and be as honest as possible. That felt like an enlightenment, it was quite liberating, I could confront these emotions whether they were good or bad, see them to make something out of them. Songs that I thought would be too intimate, are the ones that people like the most.”

For Gonzalez There is nothing that is too personal, when you feel insecure, the best thing to do is to focus on that feeling. “It is a way of making peace with a memory, of crystallizing it to take care of it, even if it is something that is not the best,” says the singer-songwriter.

Although this isn't easy, there is something bittersweet about the process. “When you break up with the person, the dream dies.” For the singer, having that moment with someone is worth it. This involves mixing the good and the bad to keep that honesty, eroticism goes hand in hand with romance in the band's music.

It's like walking a tightrope, how to deal with eroticism in love songs. If I try to be honest, sexuality is something important to me, it comes from a place of love, eroticism grows from that love.”

After this reflection on the past, Gonzalez He spoke a little about his expectations for his concert in Mexico. “The Mexican audiences have been very passionate about us, it will be interesting to see which songs from this new album will appeal to them the most (…) I feel like I adapt to the audience, I want to play everything they want to hear.”

Cigarettes After Sex will be presented at the Sports Palace on October 15th. X's can be heard on the platforms of streaming.
