Interview – SARAFINE “A trauma forever” is a journey through personal memories and traumas

Interviews

“Un Trauma per Semper” is Sarafine's debut album, an EP that represents an intimate and profound journey through memories and personal traumas.

A multifaceted artist and tireless communicator, Sarafine tells herself through a sound mix that challenges genre labels, ranging between electronic, dubstep, techno and pop, always at the service of the stories she wants to tell.

The artist confesses with honesty and irony, exploring the relationship between the need for control and the ability to abandon oneself, the power of music to evoke emotions and the challenge of transforming vulnerability into a creative force. A dialogue that takes us behind the scenes of his artistic process, from the initial inspiration to the influences that shaped his style, up to the plans for the future.

Here is Sarafine, between past, present and a look full of energy towards what is to come.

Marriages end like a shooting star, even diamonds fail,
while my trauma is forever.”

THE INTERVIEW

Let's start with the title: “A trauma forever”. Why this strong choice for your debut EP?

Yes, the title is strong, but it really comes from me. The EP contains small events from my life that I transformed into music. It is a journey through memories and personal traumas, which I have learned to hold together thanks to vulnerability. As you can see on the cover, there is my fragmented face, held together by a thread: it is a metaphor for how these traumas have shaped me and, ultimately, made me stronger.

“Scrolla” opens the EP with a concept of social frustration, while other songs talk about more intimate experiences. Can you tell us something about this duality?

“Scrolla” is an introduction. It's about the frustration we feel scrolling through social media, seeing lives that seem better than ours. From there I start with a personal analysis, understanding that we are the ones who deny ourselves the possibility of living better. Then there are pieces like the one on Tinder, which is lighter but profound: it talks about the difficulty of creating real connections in a world dominated by expectations.

Speaking of the Tinder piece, you talk about shattered expectations. Is this a criticism of today's relationships?

It's not so much a criticism as a reflection. Today we show up to appointments with a mental list of “things that have to go right”. As soon as something doesn't add up, we discard the person without looking into it further. It happened to me too. I wondered: how many authentic connections do we lose because we stop at the surface?

Instead, “Regina della Macarena” seems like a more ironic and carefree song. How was it born?

It was born from an episode from my childhood that I reinterpreted with adult eyes. It's a song about dancing, about letting go, but also about difficulty connecting intimately. It's a celebration of movement and fun, but with a melancholy subtext. At concerts I always dance it with the audience, so it's also my way of breaking barriers.

Your sound mixes electronic, dubstep, techno and pop. How did you develop this eclectic style?

I have never been a genre “purist”. I love very different music and I wanted to create something that was communicative, capable of surprising and satisfying the listener. My music adapts to the story: each song has an image and I try to translate it into sounds.
I like to build expectations in the listener and then surprise them.

Looking at your past a X Factorhow do you experience your artistic journey now?

I look back at that period with affection, but also with the awareness that I am growing as an artist.
Today I feel that what I do represents me 100%. I also like to see how the program continues to enhance new talent. I liked many artists from the last edition, even those who didn't make it to the live shows.

Three words to describe your EP?

Raw, surprising and honest.

And finally: when will we see you live again?

On December 7th I will be in Courmayeur for a special event. It will be the first showcase of “A Trauma Forever” and I can't wait to bring it to the public. Then there are other plans in definition, so… stay tuned!
