Seven years of record silence and a world that, in the meantime, has changed radically. The Negrita return with ruthless songs, an album that leaves no room for indifference: nine songs as snapshots of a restless society, between disillusionment, anger and search for independence of thought.
A concept that has its roots in the folk but opens up to sound and literary contaminations, with symbolic tributes to Bob Dylan and Francesco De Gregori. A political album in the deepest sense of the term, an act of artistic and cultural resistance. We talked directly to them.
Here is their story.
The interview
After years of record silence, Negrita return with an album that seems to enclose their most authentic essence. How was this album born?
We crossed a complex period, like everyone else. The pandemic has removed the stage, but also inspiration. At a certain point, however, something was unlocked: we rediscovered the pleasure of playing without pressure, without precise objectives. And so, slowly, the songs started to flow naturally.
On the disc there is a strong poetic component, almost a “poetic resistance”. What do you mean by this expression?
Poetry, in a certain sense, is already a form of resistance. We live in an era in which everything is consumed quickly, where you listen to absently. We have chosen to slow down, to take the time to write texts that had a specific weight, who spoke of us, of the world around us, without rhetoric but sincerely.
Musically, however, how did you deal with the processing of the album?
We got naked. We have dug among our roots, those of rock, blues, folk, trying to give a new guise to our pieces. We recorded lively, with real tools, leaving room for imperfection, which for us is synonymous with humanity.
The disc seems to have a cohesive narrative, as if it were a journey. Was it thought in this way?
Yes, absolutely. We just didn't want a collection of songs, but a story. Each song is a piece that brings the listener into a path made of reflections, stories, emotions. The idea was to create a flow, a journey that had a well -defined beginning and end.
Is there a piece that you consider particularly representative?
Drigo: Difficult to choose only one, but surely there are songs that best synthesize our current mood. One of these is (title of the song), which tells the need to remain authentic, not to be overwhelmed by a world that seems increasingly distant from certain values.
Is there a common thread that binds the songs of the disc?
Surely. Each song is a chapter of a book, a path that brings us through different emotions, but without a definitive end. It is a journey that is continually renewed, like a cycle that starts every time.
Spring is a recurring symbol in this project. What does it mean for you?
Spring is rebirth, it is the return of light after a period of shadow. After months of closing, of uncertainty, we felt the need to express this desire to review the sun and to return to live fully.
Can music still be a tool for social change?
Absolutely yes. We are surrounded by hatred and divisions, especially in social media. Music has the power to unite, to make you think, to open spaces of authentic comparison. We feel responsible for carrying out this message.
Have you ever thought about experimenting with artificial intelligence in your music?
No, creativity is a human process, made of errors, intuitions, experiences. The IA can be a technological support, but it will never be able to replace the soul and the essence of artistic creation.
How do you see the future of music in an increasingly digital era?
Digital offers immense possibilities, but we believe that the real connection with the public still passes through authenticity. We experience with technology, but the heart of our work remains analog, made of real tools, of hands that sound, of voices that tell lives lived.
After so many years of career, what still pushes you to make music?
The need to express ourselves. We have never been a band that sounds for inertia. If we feel we have something to say, we write and publish. This album was born like this, from the need to find a meaning, to tell the present with our voice. And as long as we have this urgency, we will continue to do it.
