Interview – Davide Shorty: with Serena Brancale and Aine 'call us the Avengers of the soul

Interviews

“New form” is Davide Shorty's new album. A disc that moves between hip hop, soul, jazz and songwriting.

New form is an intense and personal journey that was born from the ashes of a fire (in 2023 a fire forced Davide to leave his room and his study in London) and turns into a work that speaks of renewal, resistance and beauty in opponent.

Produced entirely by Davide himself, the album is a sound mosaic that reflects on universal themes such as love, toxic masculinity, depression, politics and disillusionment.
Each trace is a fragment of life, born from necessity and inspired by Davide's experience, who has been able to transform his limitations into creative resources.

I have always liked the concept that “nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, everything is transformed”.

The world around us, and with it, constantly changes: everything is cyclical, nothing is emptied, changes only in shape. This happened to me when a fire forced me to change my way of working and approaching music: I started moving constantly, leaning on several studies scattered around the world, I first produced all the songs of the album.
This album was born in a different way, it was a puzzle and is the son of the limitations.
But the limitations undress you and compare you with yourself.
I found some resources within me that I didn't know I had: I found my new form “
(Davide Shorty)

Born from Informal Jam, from love for music and friendship, the album is embellished with collaborations with Daniele Silvestri, Serena Brancale, Ainé, Casadilego and Giò Sada. Each trace of this album was born as a necessity: from the painful reflection of a separation to the comparison with the system and politics, passing through the search for themselves in an increasingly disconnected world. It is an album that invites you to look inside and welcome the transformations.

Hi Davide, here we are! Let's start immediately: I listened to the record and I don't want to do cute, but I found a lot of ideas. Already from the title track you could ask questions for an entire interview.

Yes, this album is a new adventure, perhaps my most vulnerable. I really showed myself as I am.

In the Title Track Canti: “I am alone with myself. I find meaning to all this only when I don't judge myself … “. What does it come out when you judge yourself?

Darkness comes out. When I judge myself, I stop, and not in a positive sense. I dissociate myself, I don't want to hear, know, be there. I am learning to accept myself, rather than judging myself. Transforming yourself is not a linear process and is often painful, but pain teaches.
I am reading “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*CK”, which speaks of this: choose what to give to importance.

Thirty years I am a moment. What are the strengths and weaknesses of your generation?

We are different, but we have a great generational drama: we constantly compare ourselves to others. The Italian educational system has not given us the opportunity to specialize enough, there is too much generalism and little attention to emotional intelligence. I am ADHD and dyslexic, but at school it didn't even talk about it. Today I know it's not a disorder, but a different way of processing things.

My generation is very distracted, but the new ones are even more, because they have infinite resources and very low attention.

What is your next goal?

Knowing me better, learn more and more, communicate better.
Being and staying, but also leaving when the time is.

Let's move on to music. Your sound is always stylish, between pop, soul and songwriting. Is it difficult to stay in this mood without looking for the hit?

I've never done music to make a hit. For me it is a therapy. I would be difficult for me to try to write a hit at the table. I make music freely, thinking about how to have fun while creating it.

Let's talk about collaborations. You have featuring with artists close to you, like Serena Brancale, but also with apparently more distant names, such as Daniele Silvestri or Lego's house. How were they born?

I don't think I'm so far away from Daniele Silvestri or Casadilego. With Daniele we share the taste for the game of words and irony. With Lego's house there is the jazz that unites us. With Serena Brancale, Ainé I am my sister and brother. The Soul Avengers called us. Collaborations are always born by affinity and desire to make music together.

If I could choose three artists to collaborate with, who would they be?

Robert Glasper, Giorgia and … Kendrick Lamar or Anderson .Paak, even if I see them almost impossible. But you have to dream!

The tour starts on April 3. What should we expect?

A more rock show than usual, with a new band. We will be in “full combat” formation, we fight with music weapons. It will be all played live, without sequences. I want to keep the staff as natural as possible.
