Interview: Achille Lauro “ordinary mortals” is a reflection on our fragility

Interviews

“Common Mortali” is the seventh studio album by Achille Lauro, to be released on Friday 18 April.

A disc that marks a decisive change of course and a maturation, fully revealing the songwriting soul of an artist who has always been inclined to metamorphosis.

After crossing the Urban, Glam, Rock and pop, Lauro now moves in a more intimate and reflective direction, inspired by the big names of the Italian songwriter. A new path that finds shape in twelve tracks written between Los Angeles and New York, the result of a long overseas stay and a deep and meditated work.

Produced entirely by Daniele Nelli and Gowtribe – already alongside Lauro in songs such as March 16 and Sunday – ordinary mortals is an album of dedications and confessions, in which the artist tells glimpses of personal life by intertwining them with universal feelings. Among the protagonists of his songs are the mother Cristina, a great love, their people: real and symbolic figures who give voice to common and profound emotions, those of the “common mortals”.

Already anticipated by the individual young unconscious, presented at the last Sanremo Festival, and desperate love – both certified respectively gold and platinum – the disc has as a focus track amor, a song set in a night and melancholy Rome, where love is consumed in the arms of the eternal city. From April 14, an exclusive preview of the song is available on Tiktok.

The interview

The “common mortal” title has a strong symbolic connotation. What does it represent for you?

“Ordinary mortals” is a record of great people and dedications, with a Roman songwriting connotation inspired by the music I listened to when I was little and went to the beach with my parents in the car.
The expression “common mortals” indicates equality between all of us. How fragile we are, how human we are. There is nothing more poetic and romantic than this.

It is an idea of sharing human experience, a reflection on our vulnerability and the importance of the relationships that define us.

The album cover is very suggestive, with your image combined with a butterfly. What does this choice represent?

The butterfly is an incredible animal for its delicacy, for the evolution of its life, for the duration of its existence. I think it perfectly represents man, his metamorphosis. The butterfly symbolizes the beauty of life and its fragility, and I believe that this metaphor is very suitable for what I want to convey with this album.

“Ordinary mortals” was written between Los Angeles and New York. How did this experience affect your artistic path?

Staying out, far from everything, allowed me to see me from the outside. I had time to reflect and really understand how I had come so far. These cities, with their energy, have given me a different perspective, an opportunity to write with greater awareness. It was a period of introspection that deeply influenced the writing of the album.

Your new single Love It seems to be a particularly special song. How would you describe it?

Amor is a unique song in my career. First of all, it is a great dedication to my city, Rome, and also to a special woman. But most of all, it's a thank you. Compared to my past songs, which often had a darker tone, love is a different color. It is a song full of light, of gratitude, and is dedicated to those who live great loves. I hope it becomes the soundtrack of many special moments.

In June, the Circus Maximus awaits you for two sold-out dates. How are you preparing for these concerts?

I am very lucky, on June 29th and 1 July many people await me at the Circus Maximus. I am preparing a show worthy of this occasion. It will be a collective experience, rather than a simple concert, something deep, a moment of total sharing. I feel in the right place, aligned with the audience that follows me. Music is a mood that is shared, and it is beautiful that people can perceive and do just what I try to tell.
