A Bottle of Ketchup: A Lifesaver in the Open Sea
In December, François was out on a sailboat near Saint Martin, repairing his vessel. What seemed like an ordinary day quickly turned into a nightmare as unexpected weather conditions swept him out to sea. With no navigational skills and nothing but a sailboat, he found himself drifting across the vast expanse of the Caribbean Sea, alone and without any supplies.
With no food or water, survival seemed nearly impossible. But as François explained in a video released by the Colombian Navy, he was forced to rely on a humble bottle of ketchup, garlic powder, and Maggi cubes mixed with water. “I had nothing to eat, just a bottle of ketchup, garlic powder, and Maggi cubes. I mixed everything with water to survive for about 24 days,” he said.
The idea of surviving on a makeshift concoction of condiments might sound far-fetched, but in the dire circumstances François faced, it was enough to keep him alive. Adrift and Disoriented
François’s struggle started when his sailboat was caught in rough weather while he was working on it. With no experience in navigating open water, he quickly became disoriented, drifting farther from land with every passing day. “Without any knowledge of navigation, he was lost and disoriented at sea,” stated the Colombian Navy in a press release.
Despite his best efforts to use the sailboat’s equipment and send distress signals, François was alone and isolated. For weeks, he battled the harsh elements and uncertainty, unable to contact anyone. At one point, he began to lose hope, thinking about his family and the possibility that he might never see them again.
“I couldn’t do anything but sit and wait… 24 days away from land, with no one to talk to, not knowing what to do or where I was. It was tough, at times I lost hope,” François shared, painting a vivid picture of the emotional toll such an experience can take.
A Signal of Hope
Just when all seemed lost, a glimmer of hope appeared on January 15th. As he gazed up at the sky, François spotted an airplane flying overhead. With no communication device at his disposal, he resorted to an old survival trick. Using a mirror, he reflected the sunlight to signal for help.
“I saw an airplane pass over. I had a mirror, and I started sending signals with the sunlight’s reflection. And it worked,” he recalled. His determination paid off when the plane spotted him. Not long after, François’s sailboat was located 120 nautical miles northwest of Puerto Bolivar in La Guajira, Colombia.
The Final Leg of the Journey
François was rescued by a merchant ship, and after being handed over to immigration services, arrangements were made to bring him back to Dominica. His rescue marked the end of a grueling journey and the beginning of his return to his loved ones.
