FONTAINES DC 'In The Modern World' New Single (Watch Video)

Music news

Fontaines DC release today In The Modern World, the fourth track from the new album “ROMANCE”, due out on Friday (August 23 via XL Recordings).

Singer Grian Chatten wrote the lyrics during an “inexplicable” 10-day stint alone in Los Angeles in early 2023 while recovering from touring. He says it’s probably his favorite track. The lush, languid Los Angeles of Lana Del Rey is there, as is the decadent glamour of old Hollywood soundtracks and films like Sunset Boulevard, starring Gloria Swanson. ‘In The Modern World’ is Fontaines DC at their cinematic best: built around the image of a fictional couple reunited in the midst of Armageddon, embracing a fantasy world fueled by denial and romance.

WATCH THE VIDEO

The accompanying video sees the band team up again with filmmaker Luna Carmoon (Hoard, Shagbands, Nosebleed), who also shot the video for “Here's The Thing.” Starring actor Ewan Mitchell, Carmoon’s equally cinematic video places “In The Modern World” in the brutal, passionate, fetishistic theater of a Car Jitsu match.

THE DISC

ROMANCE is Fontaines DC’s most ambitious album yet, and its 11 tracks are a compilation of ideas that have developed between the band members – Grian Chatten (vocals), Carlos O’Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar), Conor Deegan (bass) and Tom Coll (drums) – since they released Skinty Fia in 2022. The band’s sonic evolution, which bared its teeth on early records with an antagonistic punk sensibility, is an ascent towards grungier breaks, dystopian electronics, hip-hop percussion and dreamy Slowdive-esque textures that may surprise fans. The shoegaze touches that first emerged on Skinty Fia unfurl on ROMANCE like a purple bruise. But any “retro aesthetic,” as Chatten describes it, is left behind. Reflecting on the upcoming release, Chatten says: “On this record we’re saying things that we’ve wanted to say for a long time. I never feel like it’s over, but it’s nice to feel lighter.”
