FKA Twigs responds by demanding that the narrative of her photographs not be changed.
The advertising campaign of Calvin Klein with the singer, released in March 2023, was considered a series of hyper-sexualized images of FKA Twigs, leading to a ban on these ads in the United Kingdom. Know the details.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), the unit in charge of regulating advertising in the United Kingdom, received two complaints regarding the advertising campaign. FKA Twigs with Calvin Klein, in which advertising was considered offensive and promoted the objectification of women, after this review the campaign images were banned. From this same session, the photographs of Kendall Jenner but they were not considered under the same parameters.
The authority argued that the images do not focus on advertising the clothing line, instead, they put the body of FKA Twigs as the center of the campaign, which can lead to offensive actions. The clothing brand, Calvin Klein, responded by stating that these images were created in collaboration with the artist and were approved by her, in addition to stating that this is not the first time they have shown campaigns like this.
After the ban, the singer stated on Instagram that she does not see the “sexual object stereotype” that they have claimed is present in her photographs. She added that considering other past and current campaigns, such as the viral shoot of Jeremy Allen White with the same brand, there is a double standard present in censorship. She shared the image of the campaign and her pride in showing the body of a woman resistant to pain, empowered and beautiful.
