In 2013, a family sorting through their late grandfather’s belongings in Brazil stumbled upon something they never expected. Among the clutter of the attic, nestled inside an old wooden speaker box, was a tortoise that looked eerily familiar.
“We couldn’t believe it,” said Almeida, a family member. Manuela, their long-lost pet tortoise, was still alive and well—three decades after vanishing. The emotional moment left tears of joy in the eyes of her mother, who had never stopped hoping the tortoise would be found.
How Did Manuela Survive ?
The question on everyone’s mind was simple: How did a tortoise survive in an attic for 30 years?

A New Chapter for Manuela (Now Manuel)
After the incredible discovery, Manuela was taken in by Almeida, who made sure their family’s miracle tortoise received proper care. Interestingly, a veterinarian later determined that Manuela was actually male, leading the family to rename him Manuel.
Since then, Manuel has thrived, growing significantly and becoming a cherished companion once again. “He’s part of the family,” Almeida said. “My mother still visits him every week, feeding and petting him like she always did.”
