Faithless were formed in 1995 by Rollo, one of the main protagonists of the British house scene, and Sister Bliss, one of the most successful DJs in the UK. Both innovative and highly qualified producers, they welcomed the British rapper into their line-up Maxi Jazz (died December 2022) singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with a folk background Jamie Catto and guitarist Dave Randall.
This mix of different skills and styles, combined with extensive touring, allowed Faithless to gradually rise to success with both the public and critics.
Faithless’ debut on Rollo’s Cheeky Records, Salva Mea, was one of the most influential house hits of the 1990s. Originally released in 1995, it entered the UK Top 10 upon its re-release in December 1996 and sold over a million copies worldwide. Their debut album, Reverence, was certified gold in 22 countries, aided by Top 10 singles and a double album of remixes. Maxi Jazz’s melodic, almost whispered vocals always add a clever, provocative edge to the electronic surges created by Rollo and Sister Bliss, who won numerous awards – including a European Grammy for Best International Dance Band.
The second album “Sunday 8pm” saw them develop a more ambient and meditative side, but the remixes of the singles by big DJs (Paul Van Dyk, Robbie Rivera) confirmed their popularity on the dancefloor. The first single from the album, provocatively titled “God Is A DJ”, entered the British Top 10 in 1998. The group reaffirmed their reputation in the clubs with their third studio album, “Outrospective”, which included the surprising single “We Come 1”.
Faithless are a rare breed in dance music; by focusing on originality of sound and intelligence of lyrics they have become a respected group as such in all respects, as confirmed by critical acclaim and success among the public.
