Documentary Coming Soon About The Sonics, Influential Garage Rock Band

Music news

Boom » will tell the story of the Sonics with interviews with Kim Thayil of Soundgarden and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam among others.

A documentary about The Sonicsa pioneering garage rock band, will finally hit theaters next month, more than five years after it first hit the film festival circuit.

Later cited by artists such as Kurt Cobain and LCD Soundsystem (who immortalized the Sonics on “ Losing My Edge “), the Tacoma, Washington quintet formed in the early 1960s and released two now-classic albums before disbanding in 1968.

These two albums – Here Are the Sonics (1965) and Boom (1966) – served as the basis for the proto-punk movement pioneered by bands like the Stooges and the MC5. Later, the Sonics influenced grunge bands from their home region, including Mark Arm of Mudhoney, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, all of whom were interviewed for Boom.

After making its film festival debut in 2018, Boom: A Film About the Sonics finally secured distribution last year, with Forge showing the documentary in dozens of U.S. theaters starting September 13. Ahead of the documentary's full release, WECB exclusively shares the new official trailer for the film:
