“Lifeline” is one of many new tracks inspired by the new adaptation of The Color Purple. Beyond Alicia Keys, the soundtrack includes contributions from Mary J. Blige, Halle Bailey, Coco Jones, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Missy Elliott, and Jorja Smith. Fantasia Barrino and H.E.R., who also appear in the film, also contributed to the soundtrack.

Alongside these soundtrack-inspired tracks is an album featuring renditions of songs from the musical by members of the cast. The film’s music was composed by Kris Bowers.

The Color Purple hits theaters on January 24, 2024. Directed by Blitz Bazawule, the film stars Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Aunjanue Ellis, Halle Bailey and Ciara. HER and Jon Batiste play their first film roles there.

The musical The Color Purple is the second film adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name. The first film, released in 1985 and directed by Steven Spielberg, included a soundtrack by Quincy Jones, who was also responsible for production. The stage musical adaptation, on which the upcoming film is based, ran on Broadway between 2005 and 2008. It subsequently won a Tony Award and was re-performed between 2015 and 2017.
