A Rocky Start
Life doesn’t always deal you the best hand, but some people, like Barry, are determined to turn things around. Barry Farmer, now 34, was abandoned by his parents at a young age. His grandmother took him in when he was just five years old, providing him with the stability he desperately needed. Despite his rocky start, Barry grew up with one clear dream: to become a dad.
A Dream to Become a Dad
Deeply moved by the plight of children in foster care, Barry decided to make a difference. A year after becoming a licensed foster parent, he welcomed his first foster child, a sixteen-year-old who later moved on to independence. Barry’s journey as a father truly began in 2011 when he adopted Jackson, his first son.
“I imagined this child to be Black,” Barry recalls. “When I arrived, Jackson was the whitest kid I had ever seen. I thought, ‘Wow, this is going to be interesting.’” Despite this initial surprise, Barry and Jackson quickly formed a close bond, and the adoption process began in earnest.
Expanding the Family
Shortly after Jackson’s adoption, he expressed a desire for a brother. Barry, who had just officially become Jackson’s father, was taken aback. “But I just became your dad 30 minutes ago!” he thought. Nonetheless, Barry took Jackson’s request to heart and soon adopted Xavier, an eleven-year-old boy, two years later. Not long after, Jemeriah, a four-year-old, joined the family.
The Joy of Fatherhood
Fatherhood turned out to be everything Barry had hoped for. “I strive to be the father I wished I had growing up,” Barry shares. “I’m involved, I’m there when my boys go to sleep and when they wake up. I try not to miss anything in their lives. I take the responsibility of being their father very seriously and never take it for granted.”
