In an unusual encounter that seems more like a scene from a whimsical storybook than real life, a property owner in a rural Missouri town in the United States stumbled upon a sight that left him bewildered. Amidst the serene backdrop of his land, he noticed a deer wandering with a colorful collar fastened around its neck. But the surprises didn’t end there; the words “pet” were also painted on the animal’s flank, creating a moment of surreal confusion and curiosity.
The event, which unfolded in late September, quickly garnered the attention of local authorities. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office dispatched a team to investigate this peculiar sighting, as reported by People magazine. However, the deer, estimated to be about two years old, had vanished by the time law enforcement arrived on the scene.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) speculated that someone might have attempted to domesticate the deer, intending to keep it as a pet. This theory explains the presence of the collar, a usual indicator of domestication not typically seen in the wild.
The Concern for the Deer’s Well-being
Following this incident, there has been growing concern for the deer’s health and welfare. Scott Corley, a wildlife protection officer, expressed apprehensions to the American press. The MDC has been closely monitoring the situation, aiming to ensure the deer’s safety.
Wildlife is Not Pet Material
This bizarre incident prompted the Missouri Department of Conservation to issue a reminder about the natural order: wild animals, especially deer, are not suited for domestic life. “In light of issues related to Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), interaction with deer is unsafe for humans and is not beneficial for the animal’s welfare,” they stated. This disease is a fatal, incurable condition affecting the nervous system of cervids, including deer, elk, reindeer, and moose.
Echoing this sentiment, the Sheriff’s Office took to Facebook to caution the public: “Wild animals should not be treated as pets, particularly deer, which should not be removed from their natural habitat.”
According to Corley, the deer with the collar could exhibit aggressive behavior, especially during mating season. Efforts are currently underway to safely capture the deer to remove the collar and release it back into the wild, where it belongs.
