Universal Music Group will proceed to remove all his music from TikTok.
Universal Music Groupa label to which artists of the stature of Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Adele and drake, will remove his music from TikTok. This is because they did not reach an agreement for a new contract before the previous one expired on Wednesday, January 31.
In an open letter published on Tuesday, January 30, Universal Music points out three points of conflict: “adequate compensation for our artists and songwriters, protection of human artists from the harmful effects of artificial intelligence and online safety for users of TikTok”.
Regarding artificial intelligence, Universal accuses TikTok of allowing the platform to be flooded with AI-generated recordings, while creating tools to replace human artists. It seems that AI is wreaking havoc on musical harmony.
While on the financial side there is the proposal of TikTok of paying a sum less than that of the previous contract and also less than what other platforms pay. Universal Music states that TikTok It represents only 1% of its revenue, despite having a huge user base.
TikTokfor its part, argues in a statement that Universal is “putting his greed before the interests of artists and composers.” They accuse the record label of moving away from a platform that serves as a free promotional vehicle. They also allege that “the selfish actions of Universal they do not benefit the artists, composers and fans”, since TikTok “has reached ‘artist first’ agreements with other labels and publishers.”
At the moment no contract renewal has been announced, so starting this Wednesday, January 31, Universal Music will proceed to remove TikTok all music under their license.
