Universal Music Group wants to remove its music catalog from TikTok
After the choice to remove music from Instagram, which later turned out to be a suicidal move so much so that it was put back shortly afterwards,
Universal Music Group has announced that, starting February 1, 2024, the entire music catalog belonging to the record company will be removed from TikTok.
As had already happened previously with Meta, the reason is the same: the failure to reach an economic agreement.
According to UMG, TikTok would have offered to pay a fraction of what other large social platforms currently pay.
However, the focus is not only on the use of music from the UMG catalogue, but also on artificial intelligence, i.e. its use linked to songs and TikTok’s failure to intervene with respect to content that would violate the artists’ music.
Not only that, Universal Music Group also points the finger at the high amount of content on TikTok that incites hatred, bullying and harassment of various kinds.
TikTok has denied the accusations and in turn accused Universal of putting its own interests ahead of those of the artists.
