Sleater-Kinney has released a new single, “ Untidy Creature », accompanied by a clip directed by Nick Pollet. The music video features Australian freediver Amber Bourke, who holds her breath in a bathtub for the duration of the introspective song.
Of the song and video, the band said: “‘Untidy Creature’ is the first song we wrote for Little Rope, although we didn’t know it at the time; we weren’t even sure if we would work on another album. We also worried that it would be too easy, because it had two elements that come naturally to Sleater-Kinney: a big guitar riff and even louder vocals. But as the year progressed, and our choices and bodily autonomy diminished, our feelings about the song changed. It has become a gift, a place to lay our darkest fears and our deepest hopes. We sometimes feel trapped or angry, and yet we breathe. »
“ For the video, we wanted imagery that spoke to the themes that permeate Little Rope : uncertainty, agitation, urgency, all the intermediate and disconcerting states with which we are forced to reckon. So we came up with the idea of a woman holding her breath in a bathtub for the duration of the song, unsure of her motivations, not knowing if she’s trying to escape, disappear, absolve herself or simply to allow yourself a moment of calm and respite. We love the tension created by an act that defies both custom and comfort. »
