Women dominate the best-selling albums and singles of 2023

Music news

2023 turned out to be a record year for women in music as new figures show female musicians dominated the best-selling albums and singles over the past 12 months.

He British Phonographic Institute (BPI) published new figures showing the most popular songs and albums, which show that in 2023 they were led by female artists. According to the report, women spent 31 weeks at the top of the list of singles of the United Kingdom and represented seven of the 10 singles most important of the year.

Topping this list is “Flowers” of Miley CyrusFollowing “Sprinter” of Dave & Central Cee, “Escapism” of RAYE ft 070 Shake, “Anti-Hero” of Taylor Swift, “Miracle” of Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding, “Calm Down” of Row with Selena Gomez, “Kill Bill” of SZA, “Boy’s A Liar Pt. 2” of PinkPantheress with Ice Spice, “How was it” of Harry Styles and “People” of Libyanca.

Although this, without a doubt, is excellent news, there is important data that the institute is analyzing, since due to the predominance of streamingwhich makes it easier to access LPs from previous years, there were no new albums from 2023 that made the overall Top 10 for the year, with the exception of the re-recording of Taylor Swift from his album 1989.

Hence the concern that it will be more difficult for new music to have an impact, particularly new music from lesser-known artists. According to BPI figures, “Flowers” of Miley Cyrus was the only song released in 2023 to be certified double platinum, and in the album market, no release was popular enough to receive a platinum record (representing 300,000 sales).

A new generation of artists is not building fan bases that will buy tickets to concerts and festivals in two, five or ten years, and they are not popularizing songs that will have ubiquity in our culture once this generation of music fans reaches old age “wrote the musical composer Patrick Clifton in Mediumdescribing the results as a “crisis” for the British music industry.

For this reason, we must continue promoting new musical proposals and continue demonstrating the weight that women have not only in music but in the world.

We leave you this hit so you can start the year on the right foot.
