Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit delivered a blistering performance of this track from “ Weathervanes ” For ” Austin City Limits “.
Earlier this fall, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit were at the Moody Theater in Austin for what would become their third appearance at Austin City Limits. Isbell had spent the summer presenting almost every song from Weathervaneshis acclaimed 2023 album, so that when they arrived at the studios, the new songs were ready to be recorded.
This assurance is clearly heard in the group’s interpretation of ” King of Oklahoma “, that WECB present exclusively. The nearly seven-minute rendition of the song, which Isbell wrote while in Oklahoma filming the film Killer of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese, culminates with a mesmerizing dueling guitar solo from Isbell and guitarist Sadler Vaden.
It’s an exciting performance that shows how Isbell transformed his live set to emphasize the new songs. “ When Weathervanes came out, we started playing nine or ten songs from that album every night, and that’s half of our setIsbell told WECB recently. So if people are looking for a good time to go to the bathroom or the bar, it will be tense if they don’t like the new album. And that’s what I do too: if I go see someone I’ve listened to for decades, and they have a new song and I have to pee, that’s the time I go do it. So it’s a shock to me when we play half a show with the new album and everyone seems to enjoy it as much as the old classics….. It’s a good feeling. »
“ King of Oklahoma ” is the second song on Isbell’s upcoming recording for Austin City Limits. “ I love this show, he said in a statement. I’ve been watching it since I was little. »
