The balance between the past and the future, the door to the Future Garage.
The Canadian musician and producer brought the British garage back in an electronic dimensional progression. With his second album, Gemini, It immerses itself in an era deconstructed, completely open towards the future, denoting an ambition of evolution and musical discovery. Through nine Tracks We listen to electronic melodies with tones Dreamy, in which a minimum presence of his voice stands out, now accompanied by female choirs, finding the exact balance between the past and the future.
To learn more about the experience behind Gemini, We talked with Benjamin David On the continuation of his work, the initial idea of the album, the sound exploration and the importance of the balance behind his new identity, as well as plans to visit Mexico with this album. Discover the door to the future with MINDS.
Contrary to what can be thought, this album is not the continuation of Mood Of 2020, it is more an experimentation that arises from the learning of this first work. A step forward that honors the past. “It's a completely new album. It is, of course, a progression musically speaking, but it is different. For a moment I hesitated if fans would wait for him. It is not as such a sequel to my first album, but this one could have a second part, in the end, it is called Gemini. There is room for two sides on him, ”explained the musician.
This first sound face shows a new facet of the artist, he enters the mixtures of the classic house, with dance bases, guiding himself along the path of the British garage, characteristic by the percussive rhythms and the vowels. “Gemini” It was the first piece for a fusion album. “The first song I wrote was 'Gemini 'although at first it was not called that, I changed it later. It was the sound I wanted to do for a long time, I wanted to try a more garage sound in the United Kingdom, outside normal dance music with a beat 4/4 and a generic production, I wanted something different. It always keeps you inspired to do something new, I started writing after it, it followed him 'I need you'with a similar viber: a Sample Very vocal, heavy, with emotion and interesting batteries. It made me very happy how they worked together (the songs) and that marked the tone for the rest of the album, ”he described.
Specifically “I need you” It was a compass for musical discoveries, the first seed for a completely new sound, we heard classic instruments diversifying with percussions, set by samples Highly rhythmic vowels. A new path for electronic music.
('I need you') Has violins on the bridge, you can listen to elements that are not normally used in electronic music. I felt that I had a beautiful emotion in the album, a bittersweet melancholy, an optimistic melancholy. I love that combination, it is very personal for me, ”said the producer.
“I was afraid regarding that song, I thought the only thing that separated me from other artists was my song of song. I didn't sing in that song, I wondered if it would be a problem, if I would stop sounding like me. I realized that the emotion expanded, because it belonged to me more than others. Today I am focusing more on it, in finding the emotion that I am, ”he concluded Benjamin David.
It is the fusion of beatsynthesizers, percussions and vocal harmony an exact combination. A mixture in which one more drop or a drop less would completely change the result. “I was fortunate to find the sounds I wanted, before and during the early stages, because something like this could not have worked. Having the incorrect sounds makes it go wrong, it has happened to me before, ”he shared. That intention and hunger of search gives rise to discoveries, to all the known are directed to what we find. “When you are inspired, listening to the music you like, a lot about it filters and creates for yourself,” he said. “It's when you find the right sound at the right time. It is crazy that a song finds you at the right time. There would be no way without that Sample member or those exact chords. ”
It makes you ask how many times you lose the opportunity to create something incredible while you do anything else, ”he explained.
Given the shape of the album, it is natural to feel in a new path, a step forward that expands the possibility. What is that feeling of beyond? To the Future GarAGE, a new subgenre that grows more day by day, the meeting point between the past and the future of electronic music. “He feels futuristic because he ends in a different place. I do not say that it is the only one trying this sound, but it is as you described, the genre looks for in the past and opens a door for the future. And it exists, the Future Garage is a genre. Previously it was a minimum sound, it focuses on The club, Something more generic and fast, now we look for something more complex, ”he reflects MINDS.
Benjamin It also refers to one of its main influences, a pioneer in The Future G.Arage. “I work with Simon Lamb of Klloa band originally from Melbourne, one of the first people to make this sound in 2017. It is a different way of gathering the elements of the club with the emotion of something you hear in your day to day. ”
With the emergence of this branch of the genre, it also puts us in contrast why electronic music and, especially, the club culture revives from the ashes. Regenerating towards a new wave of listening and taking prominence in the scene mainstream Is it the case of Gemini? MINDS He explains.
“It is a coincidence that the album came out at this time, beyond, obviously, you hear the influences we all share. Even if you think about the album of Jamie XXits sound is more Club and Dark, especially in the choice of sounds. The same with Barry Can't Swimwho are regularlyABA Dreamy or house, their new songs have an attitude DE rave. That happens around us affect our decisions, which also change over time. At the time I made more organic house songs, such as Bonobobut he felt out of time. We make decisions because we are part of the music scene, with shared experiences. ”
“The Sonidor Dreamy is Another element that you can't find much in sounds club. I introduced it to my style with the hope that it would be more original and that it would allow me to connect deeply who listens to it, ”explains the musician about the album's decisions.
First of all, this is an album with a world behind, we travel in the musical, while we set the whole experience. Visual aesthetics shares a space of concrete, brutalist and corroded, in balance with the brightness of modernity, neon lights and graffiti. “I felt satisfied with the visual side of the album. The album cover is a deconstructed image: you have the computer, the fence and the graphite concrete, as a structured version of a rave in a cellar. They existed in Melbourne, where I am, there were the parties, in the limits of the city. Now that idea of deconstruction, of what was left, is on the cover, have been destroyed and turned into departments, ”said the musician.
Finally, we are curious about the possibility that MINDS Visit Mexico, after the resounding success of your set At the festival Capital Crown 2023, on his first visit to the country. “Although I have limited the shows Live, I would love to focus on Mexico again. (The Festival Capital Crown) It was my biggest concert, weird if I think that most of my listeners are in the United States or Australia, but seeing that tent full of people was surreal, ”he shared. “Touching live I noticed the contrast between the new, more energetic, it gives it an air of freshness. It is rare because they are exciting songs, while the previous songs are slower. I try to work that contrast, so that everyone enjoy the previous songs and the new ones. ”
