Sometimes, you don’t have to go far to encounter wildlife—especially when it’s right outside your front door. That’s exactly what happened to James West, an Alaskan local, when he was driving near his home one day. It wasn’t an elk, a bear, or even a fox that caught his attention, but a young moose lingering near a roadside dumpster. At first glance, it seemed like just another curious animal, but things quickly took a surprising turn.
A Closer Look Reveals Something Wrong
What seemed like an ordinary sight became increasingly bizarre the closer James got. The moose wasn’t just hanging out by the trash; there was something strange in its mouth. It wasn’t immediately clear what it was, but it was enough to prompt James to pull over. As he inched closer, he noticed something troubling—the moose was struggling to breathe and chewing uncontrollably. It didn’t take long for James to realize that the moose had a plastic garbage bag lodged deep in its throat.

“I could see it was having trouble breathing,” James recalls. “It was chewing a lot, like it couldn’t get the plastic out, and that’s when I knew something had to be done.”
Taking Action in a Dangerous Situation
Anyone who has encountered wildlife knows how unpredictable animals can be, and moose are no exception. Known for their sheer size and defensive instincts, moose can be dangerous when they feel threatened. So, James knew he had to proceed with caution. He didn’t rush in but spent some time talking to the animal, slowly getting closer as he tried to earn the moose’s trust.

It took about 10 minutes of careful approach before James felt comfortable enough to act. “I was just talking to him, staying calm,” James explains. “I could tell he realized I wasn’t a threat.”
With the moose finally trusting him, James managed to grab the plastic bag from its mouth and pull it free. It wasn’t as difficult as he had feared, but the moment was a relief—both for the animal and for James.
A Grateful Moose
Once the bag was out, something incredible happened. The moose, which had been struggling and in distress just moments before, seemed to undergo a transformation. It went from anxious to almost playful. “I was kind of worried he’d get too excited and accidentally knock me over,” James laughs. “It was like he thought I was a friend, not just someone who saved his life.”

James spent about an hour with the moose, watching it roam around, full of energy and clearly grateful for the help. At one point, while cleaning up some of the debris around the dumpsters, he found a discarded pumpkin and decided to offer it to his new friend. The moose didn’t hesitate—it gobbled it up with enthusiasm, clearly satisfied.
“It was one of those moments where you can just see how much better off the animal is,” James says. “He was in such a good mood. I felt like everything turned out the way it was meant to.”
A Quiet Act of Kindness
After spending some time with the moose, James knew it was time to leave. He didn’t expect any recognition or thanks, but the satisfaction of knowing he made a difference was enough for him.

“I didn’t get a thank you or anything,” James says, “but honestly, seeing how happy he was after I helped him—that was the reward.”
It’s not every day you get to play a part in saving an animal’s life, especially one as large and unpredictable as a moose. But for James, this experience was a reminder that sometimes, the simplest acts of kindness can make the biggest impact, even if you don’t receive applause or praise.
