Interview with Juana Molina

Interviews

A squeezed sound exploration for the subtle and unclassifiable subconscious.

Juana Molina He began his artistic career at the age of five, when the guitar became his deepest ally; From there, he was building his world through internal letters and rhythms that, to this day, continue to feed their journey. During his career he has shown himself as an actress, composer, lyricist, producer and interpreter.

Your first album, Strangeit was launched in 1996 and, since then, it remains in a world of sound experimentation and a total approach to introspective composition. We can stop and internalize each of its record materials such as Second (2003), One day (2008) and Wed 23 (2013). In November 2024 the artist shared her recent work Exhalea compilation of songs that were out of the album Halo, launched in 2017, which maintains a conceptual similarity.

Exhale It arrives with a load of voices, guitars, sampleskeyboards and synthesizers, but also with an intense charge of inspiration, starting with the poem of Macedonio Fernández, Poem to the Astro de la Luz Memorial.

To describe the art of Juana Molina We need to discover what happens inside when creating; He does not have a precise direction or definition and the interviews have influenced their way of conceiving their own work.

What I did not like that it happened to me was that, as a result of reports, interviews and questions that they asked me throughout my career, I realize things that I did without thinking. So, once one discovers a formula, it loses magic a bit. ”

However, the constant questions led her to reflect on her method, which resulted in the creation of a “formula” that, in her opinion, subtracted magic from her work.

So, so many questions of: 'How did you do this and that?' I had to see how I did this and suddenly discovered a trick. What I did became a trick, which is not the same as discovering it. But to realize how something was done, and then I saw myself repeating that. ”

For her, excessive thought during creation can be misleading, because it limits the purity of art.

I didn't like anything that happened to me, because it seemed to me that I took off spontaneity and that forced me to have to run, to have to think. I always think that thinking during doing is wrong. Because he directs you, he deceives you, he takes purity. ”

As for your live presentations, Juana It emphasizes that each show It is an unknown. Sometimes, everything seems to be in his favor, but an unexpected factor can affect the experience. Other times, when conditions are not optimal, it ends up being a show incredible.

I think it depends a lot on me, of course, but it also depends on feedback With people. And there is something that happens that is inexplicable. There is something that happens that I can't understand what it is. I don't know if one can master that. ”

He comments that the public and the connection with the audience play a fundamental role, although there is something inexplicable that influences the result of each concert.

Sometimes I see the great megacted stars … I don't know, let's put a name … Taylor Swift, you see a video of an extract of a show And it is always seen splendid. What I do not know is if she, when he returns to the dressing room, the clothes are started and says: 'I cannot believe how bad everything came out, ”said the singer.

Juana It highlights the importance of the format of the concerts and how the disposition of the public can change the dynamics of the show. He prefers when the public is standing, since this generates a more active connection.

I think we realize in a show A little more intimate where, in short, the musician is more exposed. Like when I went to see Roy Gilberto, who was alone with the guitar. And to the guy, every thing someone shouted at him, every thing someone told him, changed his humor. ”

For her, a sitting audience is more passive, while a standing audience shares the experience more immersively.

So I don't have a way of being before going on stage. I always try to go out and do better, but sometimes it does not come out, ”concludes the singer.

The visit of Juana Molina to Mexico City, comforted us and brought energy; Thanks to its introspective letters full of spiritual, experiential and poetic similarity, it gives us a guide for survival.
