Rose Villain will be competing at the Sanremo Festival 2025. On the occasion of the 75th edition of the event, the artist will perform on the Ariston stage with “outlaws”.
“outlaw” is a song that talks about desire, of a feeling so visceral and exhausting that it almost makes you feel wrong. A fire that burns so strongly that it induces you to think and act outside the box, in order to make your dreams come true.
We met her, here's her story.
THE INTERVIEW
Let's talk about “Outlaws”. How was this song born and how much of you is in it?
There's every atom of me in this song. It all started with a piano tour created by Cripo and Federica Abbate on a summer night. That ride had been calling me for years, and I built the song around it. I wrote the lyrics and, in the end, I took it to Andrea (Sixpm) and finally okgiorgio arrived who added that sound glue that gave the final energy. “Outlaw” is about desire, passion, and that consuming feeling that couldn't help but explode.
The names of the duet evening have come out and you have chosen to duet with Chiello. Can you tell us about your choice?
Chiello is my favorite artist, I'm a huge fan of his. Last year I brought a legend from the past, now I have chosen a legend from the future. And then I grew up with Lucio Battisti: “Pink flowers, peach flowers” is a song that marked my life. Chiello is also a Battisti fan, so it was a natural choice. I wanted to pay homage to the past, but also look forward.
After last year's Sanremo, you had an intense year. How do you prepare for this new experience and what will you do differently?
The biggest lesson was to worry less about what other people think. I want to enjoy the stage more, without thinking too much about other people's judgment. This year I'm facing everything more lightly and with a clear vision: to be authentic.
Even in choosing looks, for example, I decided to show what truly represents me, without trying to please at all costs.
Nostalgia is a theme that often recurs in your music. How would you describe it?
I find it very poetic, as do melancholy and sadness. All these emotions arise from love.
Nostalgia takes you away and gives you at the same time, it's a great “whore”. But this is precisely what makes it so fascinating: it is a feeling that leaves you hopeful.
In the lyrics of “Fuorilegge” you mention Mia Martini and her “At least you in the universe”. What does this song represent for you?
It's one of the songs that left its mark on me the most. Mia Martini was a great inspiration. I remember that my mother always sang it to me, and it is a song that accompanied me in the most intense moments. I did my first singing performance performing “Men Don't Change”: I was very young, but those words reached my heart straight. Mia Martini is a figure that will always remain with me.
The lyrics talk about desires, those that make your heart beat and make you feel alive. What are your greatest wishes?
Being happy, simply. I want many things: to play at Madison Square Garden, to reach as many people as possible with my music, to see my family healthy. But at the base of everything there is happiness. This is what I want.
And if you watched Sanremo from the sofa, who would you like to see win?
I'm rooting for many friends who will be competing with me, but I'd like to see songwriting return to the top: artists like Lucio Corsi or Brunori Sas, for example. It would be nice.
The last question: how do you think the Sanremo audience will welcome “Fuorilegge”?
I think well. When I create a song, I text it a bit about people close to me, like my father. And if it reaches them, I know it can reach everyone. “Fuorilegge” is a song that deeply represents me, and it is this authenticity that I think will also win over the varied audience of Sanremo.
