To listen to Giulia Impache's debut album “IN:titolo” you need a predisposition, an openness of the soul, a conscious abandonment to the flow of a universe that never reveals itself entirely at first glance. It is not a record to be understood, but to be experienced.
The work is configured as a sound labyrinth in which the walls deform under the reverberations of emotions and intuitions.
Giulia, Turin by blood and cosmopolitan in spirit, weaves textures that are stratified like veils on a canvas, revealing a sensorial world in constant evolution. Each song is a station on an intimate journey, made up of interior excavations and universal reflections. The autobiographical themes are intertwined with a social tension that is not content to be understood, but demands to be experienced.
Musically, IN:title it is a prism that refracts different lights with each rotation: improvisation, avant dreamwave, pop-rock, electronic experimentation. The sound material is alive, in constant mutation, as if it were trying to escape the fixity of time and form. It is a song that unravels and recomposes, without ever losing its creative tension.
In its development there are various references: Lamb, the Cocteau Twins, David Lynch, Robert Wyatt but also retro jazz tastes, alien sounds, manga-sounds, medieval atmospheres, futuristic images.
Lyrically, the album presents itself as a collection of modern sonnets or ancient madrigals, in which each title becomes the incipit of a broader reflection. The choice of this approach gives the entire work an almost literary structure, a link with the poetic tradition which is however betrayed – or perhaps exalted – by the contemporary urgency of his voice.
This album was not born in a single time, but was built over the years, settling like a fertile land that collects the passage of life. It is a work that grew with the author, enriched by pauses, stumbles, rebirths. Its profound meaning lies precisely in this growth: IN:title it is a therapeutic mirror, a visual diary of the cracks that have appeared.
Rare, precious, suspended. In an Italian musical panorama increasingly saturated with immediacy, IN:title emerges as an intimate and necessary research, an act of courage that does not seek compromises.
It's a record that you don't simply listen to: you inhabit it.
TRACK BY TRACK
Oh, Girl!
Initially born and thought of as Intro, I later realized that it had its own personality and for this reason it deserved to have a noteworthy title.
This song opens my very first solo project precisely because it represents an awakening, an invitation to be heard after a long silence.
Girl, are you ready?
“Oh girl” talks about the need to start something: my record.
In The Dark
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd dies in America.
The city of Minneapolis is still burning today because of this news episode.
In the dark was born straight away, it is a collective cry that tries to answer the question: why is the world still like this? It is the intimate sound of my thoughts, the personal processing of anger and pain in the face of injustice.
No words, because perhaps there are no more.
We remain suspended, in silence.
It's the first song I ever released as Giulia Impache so I'm fond of it. I modified some aspects and deliberately chose to include it on the album because it tells very well about my artistic journey of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
(I'm) looking (for) life
Usually when I create a song the melody and the harmonic structure are born first, then I think about a tempo and, only afterwards, the words arrive and together with Jacopo we arrange and produce everything.
This song, however, was born differently.
From Jacopo's passion for the Drum Machine, I created a harmonic circuit on which a melody articulated by invented words was born spontaneously.
Thus “Looking life” was born, with a melody that seems like a meeting between the soundtracks of David Lynch and Robert Wyatt.
The hardest part was putting a text on it but then the silence, the breakup. Improvisation, rhythm, harmonic progressions and a driving melody stimulated me into action.
So I started writing a text that talks about a somewhat uncomfortable personal work situation.
“Looking life” narrates that subtle and annoying sensation of being made fun of and feeling helpless, but it is also the determination that it ends and never happens again.
What (Outside)
The voice, mine, as a tool to break down my personal barriers.
Singing saved me from a lethal shyness often misunderstood as arrogance and superiority.
Shyness makes words go wrong
It confuses intentions
It silences us
Insecurity and shyness sometimes hover over me, darkening my light. My voice is the only way I can defeat them.
So as not to be misunderstood.
Only with singing can I really express myself, be myself, know myself and also protect myself.
When I sing, I breathe.
I chose this piece as one of the singles on the album because it is one of the most personal. It addresses a topic that is very dear to me and I hope it can provide shelter for those who experience or have experienced situations such as anxiety, panic attacks and moments of vulnerability.
Life is Short
Life is short was born in 2019 after a difficult period and is the first song on the album that I wrote and performed in public alone.
The title has its origins from a song very dear to me: We Can Work It Out by the Beatles, a band that greatly influenced my music.“life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend”
Let's not waste time and accept ourselves. My first time, my acceptance mantra.
Eyes
Occhi is the piece with which I approached ancient music, the madrigal.
I chose it as a single because it is a new chapter in my musical journey, the attempt to reconcile everything that I listen to.
We went through a period of our lives where only our eyes spoke.
The eyes change, they suffer in silence, the same eyes that I wanted.
Everything
Imagine the pure fun between three lovers of electronics and club music: it's Every Thing.
Please
Please is a reflection on the encounter between man and nature.
The hope and need for a new land capable of finding a new rhythm.
Sailor (for the time being)
Sailor is the song I chose to close the album with.
A journey that I did not face alone. Like a captain surrounded by capable sailors, without them everything can sink.
Bonus tracks | When my eyes
The decision to include this track as a bonus track comes from the fact that during a live performance we played this song composed by Jacopo.
Although it comes out of the narrative of the album, for me this piece plays a crucial role on a musical level: it is the point of arrival between the experimental electronic productions of Jacopo Acquafresca and Andrea Marazzi and my musicality strongly rooted in melody and the ethereal.
A thin line of voice rests delicately on an electronic base taken to its extreme.
After two years of working together, Jacopo and I fell in love with this song for its electronic saturation, combined with very simple chords over which a cinematic melody insinuates itself. The soundtrack of a film about survival and life experiences.
